No Title

Bonjour,

This morning when waking up and looking at my personal thermometer it was blank with a "-" sign, i took it as a "nuh uh, it's way too cold for this.'' It's -2 with a near 2 feet of snow on the ground. Still snowing. Apparently the blog made it on the knoxville news last night, crazy, eh? Today i'll be hiking down alum and back up again, hiking with my friend back to her car. I'm sure I'll get some pretty cool pictures for tomorrow. Stay warm friends.

An inversion happened briefly.

2' of snow...wow ! Never hiked Leconte in the winter but would love to give it a try. Cant wait for tmrws. pics. Keep up the great work and thanx.

Words can't describe how awesome those pictures are and how much cooler it would have been to have seen it first hand. I am sure if you are hikeing down Alum today you will be breaking trail, so you two be safe and stay warm. Can't wait to see the pictures from the hike down!

Pictures are great. So glad you are keeping the blog going and giving us a daily dose of LeConte and the wonder there. I've hiked where the snow went to my knees when not packed. Be careful on the ice. Can't wait to see tomorrow's pictures!

In the name of Ernest Shackleton and George Mallory, I am leading a ragtag team of middle aged quasi-mountaineers up to the top. If Newfound Gap is closed we plan to hike up Rainbow Falls. Two questions...1...is any part of the lodge open in order to warm up? 2...I saw a post stating you were running low on fresh vegetables, do you want any?

Thanks for the great info and pictures. This is the best way I can tell people around the world what a great and diverse place we live in - East Tennessee.

We've been up there with 18" on the ground and sub zero lows before. We came down the Boulevard from Icewater Springs. It was cold as a witch's mammary. It's not the time of year for the casual hiker to be up on the mountain - even for a day, It looks pretty, but it can be deadly faster than most folks know. To be honest, I wouldn't want to have your job. I like my electric blanket and my heater. I do appreciate the photos though. Stay warm and be safe! We'll be up at the end of January/early February. Maybe we'll see you then.

How do you hike in two feet of snow??? Very slowly I guess!! I did tenmiles in 8 inches last Feb and almost collapsed!!

Glad to find this daily log, been spending a night at the shelter during the week between Christmas and Ne Years Day for over thirty five years. Would really like to see the Park open the fireplace - At this point the excuses are a bit frail.. See you on the 17th (going a little early this year). Note to Corey Simms - get an early start if you plan to hike from Cherokee Orchard via Rainbow Falls.

Robert, thanks for the tip. I wanted to go via Alum Cave, but can't if road is closed. If I must I will ascend Rainbow and descend Bull Head. I am stoked about the wintry wonderland. Too many books on Mallory.

I love this place. Allyson, Tim Webb, Tim Line and all the crew are great. This is a special place for me. I hope to live to be old one day and still climb this mountain.. Keep warm
