Sometimes you just have to stop and smell the roses, or in the case check out the sunset. The crew took a brief moment from their cleaning to enjoy the amazing sunset we had. I felt like as though I was wearing rose colored glasses.

I thought you would enjoy seeing what a real mountain man does in his spare time. Meet Gomer. He is on of the men helping work on the new septic system.

Good morning! I am running up to Le Conte on Saturday morning from Gatlinburg. I will head out of Gatlinburg on the Twin Creeks Trail next to Cherokee Orchard Road. After that, what trail would be the best to ascend and descend on the summit?
Thanks!

Hi Wayne,
I would ascend Rainbow Falls and descend Bullhead. Rainbow is pretty rocky and not a great trail to hike down. Have fun and see you up top.

Wow, the sunset is absolutely beautiful. Thanks for sharing. We were in Greenbrier over the weekend and the bloodroot is blooming. The trillium isn't far behind.

I do hope to one day become skilled enough in photography that I can capture a photo as incredible as those on this website.

Does it rain in the Smokies?

Driving down from Cleveland tomorrow and hiking LeConte on Saturday. The forecast looks like it may rain :(
Does it rain very much in the Smokies?
If so, I don't have a rain jacket, what type should I buy?

Thanks!

Greta get a cheap poncho at Wally World. Only $6.99.

@ Greta---- It does rain in the Smokies. If you do much hiking at all buy a good rain jacket from an outfitter or outdoor mail order (although it's a bit late for this weekend).

If you are buying a rain jacket for hiking you should consider many factors.
First, you will be sweating while you hike, so find a jacket made of breathable material: i.e. Gore-Tex or some such other membrane. The purpose of this fabric is to allow vapor fromperspiration to escape through porous openings while not allowing water molecules to penetrate the barrier. In essence, vapor escapes and keeps you cooler, and rain drops bead on the outside of your jacket. Whatever you do, do not buy a non-breathable fabric jacket.

@Greta,
Yes, it absolutely rains here in the Smokies. The park is considered a "temperate" rain forest and the abundance of moisture contributes to the abundance and variety of life in the area. As was previously stated, if you plan on doing much hiking, invest in a good breathable rain jacket but in a pinch, a poncho will do a good job....but you will sweat! Good luck and happy hiking.

Hiked up yesterday, it was great. The people you meet while hiking are the greatest. Hiked up with a local guy, Rick Adams,he was the best tour guide you could ask for. Thanks again for the young ladies who helped me with my knee. Made it down with no problam.

@hoofie - check out the llama train video on youtube, it's a short docu on the llama train as they travel the Trillium Gap Trail to the lodge. The pack up food and linens up and back 3 times a week during season. They pack trash back down with them.

That is a gorgeous sunset! Go Gomer!
