Nothin' But Boomers Uptop

I hate to tell you, but we haven't seen any "Skunk Apes" or "Bigfoot" (or would the be "Bigfeet") on the mountain. All we are have are boomers, birds, fox, coyotes, and bears. I am sure other animals come through at night, they are shy.

Thank goodness there was no snow this morning. It was sleeting and spitting snow balls when we went to bed. I had visions of an accumulation for the morning. It is currently 37 degrees and dry.

I have trail updates. ACB trail is fine, Boulevard trail has a little ice on it, nothing that can't be passed. Trillium is fine. Rainbow has a pretty big blowdown that you have to crawl over. As for Bullhead, I still have no word. If you hike up or down this trail, please let us know what it is like.

Just snowshoed down from a hut in the 10th Mountain Hut system in Colorado. As beautiful as it is I am anxious to get back up LeConte.

I'll be coming up in June for an overnight. Are there any overnight parking restrictions at the trailheads?

Just wondering if you have to mow the grass that surrounds the lodge and cabins? If so, what type of mower do you use?

@ Mike- There are no parking restrictions at any of the trailheads.

@Eric- We do mow the grass. My husband used a weedeater to mow all of it.

With the cold temps and snow, the kitchen looks like the place to be.

@Mike - You want to make sure that you lock your doors, make sure no valuables are left inside. We went up last year and parked at Alum Cave Bluff Trailhead. Our car was fine when we returned the next morning.

We came down Bull Head on Tuesday, and it was in great condition. Of course, you've had a storm since then!

@Jacque - The food is still delicious!

@Mike - We parked at Rainbow Falls trailhead this past Monday. Locked the car & had no problems.

So that is the stove that cooks that wonderful soup!! The first time my family came up and saw those steaming bowls of soup and the oil lamps it warmed us..heart, soul AND tummy. We still talk about the soup and the cornbread. It just doesn't get any better than that!

spiced apples
bowl of soup
cornbread
half a peach
chocolate chip bar
hot chocolate
coffee
and lemonade

June will mark our first time to LeConte. We are very excited! Any "insider" tips? We plan to take Rainbow Falls trail.

10 of my family members hiked in November and the expression on my dad and brothers face was priceless as we ate the meal by candle light. I will forever have those memories etched in my mind. Hiking twice this year and looking forward to each trip as I once again feel as thought I am on "top of the world".

Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail is open to the Trillium trailhead.

Boomers are red tailed squirrels. They are the common species on Mt. LeConte

Just wanted to say thanks for all of your help in getting the food put up and accounted for. I am always so relieved when the delivery is completed and Tim calls me to say "I think it is all here". I hope to get up there this year and check out that great kitchen! Thanks again!

I was in that kitchen March 2002...helped with the airlift restocking propane and food and t-shirts........it was -8 degrees and a full inch of frost outside with bright sunshine....sure was cold under the chopper........I remember how good the hot chocolate was that morning.....I stayed in cabin 4 with a friend, was so cool looking at the initials and dates carved on the bottom of the top bunk...we were up there for almost a week before the cloud laying on us turned to frost and allowed the chopper to fly
