Morning, SNOWWWWWW!!!!!!!! The mountain received an inch of snow and it is coming down hard up top. It looks like we may have 6" to a foot by the end of the day, according to my very scientific estimations (looking out my cabin window). The high was 36. The low was 15. It was 15 and snowing at observation. 441 is still closed and looks like it may be all day. If you are considering visiting the mountain, expect a longer hike up Rainbow, Bullhead or Trillium. Pay attention to the Park Service's website & twitter feed for updates on road conditions. Keep in mind - be prepared for serious winter hiking, the lodge is CLOSED! Have fun my friend. Dana O 02/11/2012 11:08am
We had a little light dusting here in the flatlands of West Tennessee. So far Alaska seems to have had the monopoly on winter this year. JP enjoy your long awaited snow! Brian 02/11/2012 11:05am

I got lucky and had a trip planned a couple of days after the last significant snow on January 13th. I was on about 5 inches of snow at 20 degrees. Would love to be there today. Jessica 02/11/2012 12:28pm

Thanks for posting the link. Nice job JP. Was that a set up interview or did you just happen to be at the trailhead? We had about 1 1/2" of snow and 20 degree temps so we took the opportunity to do a 12 miler at Caesars Creek in Ohio. Thanks for the inspiration. JP 02/12/2012 10:47am
Total happenstance! Walked down right into the camera shot & ended up talking to the reporter. Fun stuff! Tony 02/11/2012 6:08pm
Has anyone driven east on 321 to 32 to the Davenport Gap area? If so how long of a drive is it? Is there parking where 32 appears to end at the AT? Any input would be great. Thanks. H Clark 02/11/2012 7:46pm
Tony, I've driven highway 32 from the 321 junction to Big Creek. Seen internet postings warning about parking on 32. Evidently, the parking must be road side only. However, there is a ranger station marked on my map at Big Creek. Part of highway 32 is unpaved, but well maintained gravel. William Farmer 02/11/2012 6:46pm
My keychain thermometer said it was 5F when I got there a little after lunchtime. It felt like it. I know I was walking through some pretty deep snow, too. Leave a Reply |
