The falling dews seemed to strain and purify the air, and I was soothed with an infinite stillness. I got the world, as it were, by the nape of the neck, and held it under in the tide of it's own events, till it was drowned, and then I let it go down stream like a dead dog. Vast hollow chambers of silence stretched away on every side, and my being expanded in proportion, and filled them. Then first could I appreciate sound, and find it musical. Thoreau

_Morning,

It was a grey day up top. The high was 41. The low was 35. It was 36 and hazy at observation. The mountain received 1.27" of rain yesterday. It was one of those day that I felt (perhaps accurately) like the only person for miles around.

ps: Happy Groundhog Day! I bet Phil didn't even realize there was a winter! On another note, I miss laughing at Bill Murray's awesomeness.

The answer is definitely not enough. Somewhere depressingly under 10 inches.

Concerning yesterday's topic regarding rule breakers. Seems the root of the problem stems from people just not playing attention and/or being wrongly advised by others. Here are only a few examles from a few recent examles from post. LeConte is located with in a national park, not a national forest. There are major differences in the rules and regulations between the two of them. Working the system regarding reservations, that speaks for it's self. Buying LeConte t-shirts on the mountain in February, it (All regarding the lodge )is closed down. The point is don't base a trip off bad information or your be breaking the rules and even know it. Check with a knowledgeable source be for heading out.

Chris D - It was not indicated or implied that LeConte was part of the National Forest. The post referenced the Red River Gorge area, not LeConte. We all realize the differences regarding camping in the two areas.

Please read the last post from yesterday. Apparently some do not. Seems some took my post as an attack which it was not. There is just some inaccurate information posted from time to time which may mislead some folks. People need to check with park service before heading out if unfamiliar with park rules and regulations.

Just wanted to clarify, Chris, that I was not saying you can buy shirts on Leconte. I know the lodge is closed now and I think I indicated that. I was just saying that the office in Pigeon Forge is not closed now and their website is not closed. I know they usually have leftover shirts from the previous year as I've seen them in a big tub in the Leconte check in office on the mountain when I go up in September every. Was simply saying a phone call or internet connection could be made to determine if there are shirts for 2011 available if the person who inquired wanted to go that route. Otherwise he'd have to wait until they release the 2012 shirts which probably isn't until the season officially opens in March. Would not want to be accused of giving out bad information.

Please read further back. It was stated to get a shirt on top earlier in the postings. Was not pointing fingers just advising folks to plan ahead and get accurate information to avoid issues.

Ah, I remember that view all to well. Looks like a view from the the boulevard trail. Look closely and you can see the slide on the back side under Myrtle point.

JP, I loved that movie with B. Murray, Groundhog Day. Funny one. And speaking of winter, a friend told me today that the groundhog predicts 6 more weeks of winter, and I said, how can we have more of something we have yet to have?!? In Indiana we have had virtually no snow, no winter; such a disappointment, as LeConte's lack of snow this year has been for you.

Have you even been able to use the snow shoes JP? I guess you can pack them up for the winter. Do you know any snow statistics for Leconte and the possibility of getting serious snow in Feb and Mar?

Rob,
I've barely used my boots, much less my snowshoes. I haven't had the heart to pack anything up yet, but who knows? Everybody pretends they have the secret to the weather patterns and still ends up surprised. I'd put the probability as high, as most people seem to have it written off and those are the same types of people who typically end up being wrong.

Love the picture of Mt Leconte. I miss seeing lots of snow on that mountain, unfortunate for you , that you haven't had much snow. Looking forward to great pictures tomorrow. Makes me miss that hike looking at all your great pictures. Enjoy your last few weeks!
