Almost

6/24/2012

Sixty nine degrees. We almost hit the 70 degree mark. The low last night was 59 with a high of 69 for yesterday. It was a great day to be up top. We are still getting our usual cloud coverage. The threat of rain seems to be a presence every day. I feel like I am at the beach, where you can bet you will get an afternoon shower everyday. All the rain is making the flowers go crazy. The coneflowers are coming along nicely. I bet we see color within the next few weeks.

Nice shot! What a beautiful animal. I've seen deer atop LeConte many times and I am impressed by how comfortable they are in that (unhunted) space. My favorite encounter was along the last stretch of either Rainbow or Alum Cave where the thicket to either side of the trail is sort of a Harry Potter's wood. Off to the right there were four deer leaping through woods so dense I don't know how long it would take me to walk it, and I am certain the effort would have shredded myself or my clothing. Still, the deer were bounding back and forth parallel to the trail. They'd bound away, and then bound back as if in some sort of game of tag, pretty much unconcerned by our presence. Since then, I always try to get quiet along that stretch in the hopes of seeing deer play like that again.
