Morning y'all,
It is a gorgeous, clear morning up top. The high reached 27 degrees yesterday. The overnight low was 21 degrees. It was 26 degrees and clear at 7am observation. There was no new precipitation on the mountain and a trace of snow is still on the ground. The low temperatures yesterday mean that there has been no melt, so significant ice is still coating the mountain. Be careful! Use spikes or risk falling HARD! Enjoy the day! we only said goodbye with words. i died a hundred times. you go back to her and i go back to black.2/8/2014
Morning y'all,
It's a brisk, beautiful morning up top. It is the kind of morning makes you feel that this park is perfectly named. The high yesterday reached 29 degrees. The overnight low was 17 degrees. It was 24 degrees and clear at 7am observation. The mountain has a trace of snow kissing the ground and branches and rocks and trees. It is wonderful. The trails are pretty slick, so be careful! I've heard that the road is open this morning, enjoy the day! Morning y'all, It is another beautiful clear morning above the clouds. The high yesterday reached 27 degrees. The overnight low was 17 degrees. It was 17 degrees at clear at 7am observation. There was plenty of cloud cover and no warm temperatures yesterday, so there is still a trace of snow remaining up top. The trails are still surprisingly slick considering it last rained 4 days ago, but plenty of the water flowing off the mountain refroze into dangerous ice. Wear spikes and be cautious! You're a long way from help out here... Yesterday was one of the most peculiar days I've seen up here. The mountain had a bright grey sheen to it, with an inversion cap in the valley and grey skies all day. It almost felt as if there were two different skies. I could see the Cumberland Mountains off in the distance above the first sky, then things closed off and greyed up as I looked towards the sun. It felt like an Alaskan twilight, an ebbing brightness that always seems on the verge of opening back up, only to fade away yet again. Instead of letting it also cloud up my mind, I decided to head out and investigate, to see if I could find more light in different spots on the mountain. Solar hide and seek. Goethe's last words were 'more light'.
Morning y'all, It's a beautiful morning up top. The high yesterday reached 44 degrees. The overnight low got down to 10 degrees. It was 17 degrees and clear at 7am observation. The mountain received a light dusting of snow yesterday. There is very little snow on the ground, but the trails are in rough shape due to all the rain we received over the past few days. Expect some slick spots! Yesterday was a fantastic afternoon for ambling around up top. The wind was rollicking like a ship at sea and an unexpected light snow started falling on my way out to Myrtle Point. The clouds were forever changing, a new scene every time one's focus drifted skywards. I did not see another person all day, the blustery conditions and seemingly poor views kept folks in the valley. I tend to look back on my stints on the mountain and remember the big hikes, spectacular views, reunions with good friends and other noteworthy bookmarks, but it is the days like yesterday that really get into my blood, that keep me refilling my cup. Long, calm afternoons with great books that seem to stretch for days, peaceful runs with nothing and everything to distract me, drinking in the windsounds on my porch like a fine whiskey, the gentle peace that permeates everything. Wild and free and untamed.
Morning y'all, It's a grey, grey day up top. The high yesterday reached 44 degrees. The low last night reached 37 degrees. It was 37 degrees and cloudy at 7am observation. The mountain received .57" of rain yesterday. There is no snow remaining up top. The trails should be soggy, so bring an extra pair of socks if you intend to summit! The wind was putting on a show yesterday afternoon. I was perched on one of the quieter cabin porches watching the trees swirl in the grey madness. It was mesmerizing. When you focus so intently on a sensation like that, you seem to float away. Before long, my mind was envisioning myself as one of those giants, swayed by invisible forces. After spending a good portion of the afternoon as one of the trees, I realized that I am also pushed and pulled by a million desires, the roots of which I comprehend no more than the Fraser Firs comprehend the wind. I can only hope that I can endure my mystifying forces with as much grace as my noble neighbors.
Morning y'all, It's another beautiful day up top. The high yesterday reached 39 degrees. The low got down to 28 degrees. It was 39 degrees and clear at 7am observation. The mountain received no new precipitation and there is only patchy snow remaining up top. The trails are in good shape, I came up Alum yesterday in sneakers and carefully stepped around the few slick spots on the trail. It should be a great day, enjoy! There was plenty to be grateful for on the mountain yesterday. Once I got past the double stair on my hike up Alum, the mist thinned and I started to soak in the big views above the clouds. This big beauty shifts your perspective and your human alltoohuman problems melt away in the face of such grandeur. The beauty triumphs, making your sorrow feel petty and self indulgent. The sunset above the clouds was spectacular as always and the cloud cover stayed intact all night, creating a starshow from the 17th century without the light pollution from Pigeon Forge and Gat Vegas. Deep breaths and silent astonishment and blessed relief.
Morning y'all,
It's a warm, cloudy day atop Mt. LeConte. The high yesterday reached 47 degrees. The low got down to 36 degrees. It was 38 degrees and cloudy at 7am observation. The trails are pretty slushy already and I'd bet that'll be the case all day. Enjoy the warm temperatures! PS: Thanks to Greg for the Snickers bar! That thing has seen a lot of backcountry!! Morning y'all,
It's a beautiful, clear morning up top. The high yesterday reached 41 degrees. The overnight low was 27 degrees. It was 41 degrees and clear at 7am observation. There was plenty of sunshine yesterday, so the trails have a bit of melt and only 3 inches of snow remains up top. There's more sun in the forecast, so expect unseasonably warm conditions and sloshy trails. It should be a great day to get out, enjoy! PS: Thanks to Stephen for the NY Times! My first of the season, I'm sure to savor it today on a cabin porch! |
