Morning y'all, It's a beautiful, clear morning up top. The high yesterday reached 49 degrees. The overnight low was 37 degrees. It was 44 degrees and clear at 7am observation. The mountain received no new snow or precipitation and there is only an inch of snow remaining up top. I would still recommend some traction devices if you intend to reach the summit. Get out and enjoy this beautiful day! It is hard to believe that I am hiking down the mountain for good on Thursday... but all good things must come to an end. I will be heading up to New Hampshire to caretake at the AMC's lovely Carter Notch Hut for the Spring. After that, my friend Billy and I are embarking on a cross country road trip and hiking adventure - the Triple Gem. We will be starting Vermont's Long Trail on June 16th. Once we complete the Long Trail, we will drive out to Denver and start the Colorado trail. Following the Colorado trail, we will be driving out to Yosemite and embarking on the John Muir trail. We hope to finish up around mid-August. If you are inclined, you are welcome to follow our adventure on my personal Instagram page @walasiyi_jp... In addition to this exciting news, I was fortunate enough to work with the wonderful folks at the Great Smoky Mountains Association this winter. They will be publishing an article I wrote about wintering over on LeConte. It will feature photos from the always impressive Gary Wilson. It should be out in the September issue of Smokies Life. Thanks again to Steve Kemp and Gary - it was a pleasure collaborating with you two!

The forecast is calling for some more snow throughout the day today, but for now it is beautiful out. The trails are sure to be a bit slick, I would definitely recommend traction devices for the trickier sections. Get out and enjoy this beautiful day! I spent yesterday enjoying one of my last long cabin days of the season. I hike down in a week and I'll be trying to fit in some big runs before I take off, so it was the perfect day to rest up and enjoy the quietude. I read all day, scribbled a little and just savored the way my cabin seems to fit me like a hermit crabs' hermit crabshell. I wish I could take it with me. I can't get too nostalgic, I am too excited for all that is to come. Carter Notch is another of my blessed places and my hiking exploits this summer will satisfy my wanderlust (or fuel it further like any other addiction?) for some time... I will be posting a link to my new Instagram account sometime next week so that blog readers can keep track of Billy and I on our journey. Morning y'all, It's a beautiful, wintry morning up top. The high yesterday reached 40 degrees. The overnight low was 14 degrees. It was 14 degrees and cloudy at 7am observation. The mountain received 1 inch of new snow and there is approximately 2 inches of snow remaining. The trails are a bit slick after yesterday afternoon's rain froze overnight... I would recommend some sort of traction devices if you intend to reach the summit. Get out and enjoy the day! I had a wonderful hike up yesterday afternoon. I got to the trailhead around 2:30 and you could feel in your bones that a storm was coming in. I'm not a meterologist, but there are some days where you just know you're in for a sufferfest. I started off in running shorts and a singlet, with my rain jacket nearby for the cold breezes above Monotony Ridge. I was both excited to get back to the lodge again for the home stretch of my season and antsy from long days of travel and it felt so, so good to be exerting myself again - every step a step closer to the calm of my cabin. As predicted, the rain started to fall hard on Monotony Ridge. My limbs were getting a raw turnip red color from the cold and exertion. I stopped for a minute to put on my jacket and collect the moment for my memory. There are only so many days and they are all a joy on the mountain... |
