What a fantastic day for a hike up the mountain. It was a pleasant trip up. A lot of views and a cool breeze. I have to say, in the 8 years I have been on this mountain, this is the best weather I have seen for April. The snow is melted and turned the corner around the kitchen and were greeted by the llamas. What a welcomed sight. They were able to make it up Trillium. Now, Trillium trail is still closed, they are allowing the llamas to use the trail.
The season is starting to feel somewhat normal. Chris and I had a great time on our days off, but we are ready to get back to work. I will leave you with some images of our favorite four legged friends. Just a reminder the reservation office is closed on the weekends. So the next post will be on Monday when Allyson returns to the Lodge.
Have a good weekend! We just spoke to Henry, he said right now it is 23 degrees at the LeConte Lodge. The high yesterday was 46 and the low was 23. There are still patches of ice so crampons may be needed in some places.
Alum Cave Bluff trail still looks good. We had a call this morning asking the Latitude and Longitude for the Lodge. While looking up this information we found this TOPO Map of LeConte so we thought we would share. The Latitude is 35.6545 degrees North and Longitude is 83.4413 degrees West. Happy Hiking! Talked to Henry, he said the high yesterday was 70 and the low was 44 at 7:00a.m. this morning. Temperatures continue dropping and it is currently rainy and very windy on the mountain. There is still snow and ice on the upper portions of Rainbow and Bullhead. Advise caution. Alum is in good shape. With colder temps tonight, more ice could form.
Chris and Allyson are down from the mountain, it's a rainy day today. We'll keep you posted if there is a change for any trail conditions.
I appreciate everyday having nature as my alarm clock. Waking up to this view every morning is a great way to start the day. Chris and I will be heading off the mountain this evening to get some rest, but don't worry folks, the blog updates will continue. I am finding it difficult to believe I am already heading off the mountain and the llamas have not been up yet. This season is taking a little while to get back in the swing of things. The weather has been incredible the past 5 days. The crew is enjoying the mountain air and sunshine. I will be back to on Monday with some pictures of wildflowers.
It is amazing how a week of warm weather can change the mountain. The snow is melting and our daily routines are returning to normal. We are flying one more load up the mountain, and hopefully that will last until the llamas can make it up. I am ready to see those cute, stinky llamas. The high yesterday was 64. It turned out to be another amazing day on top of Mt. LeConte. I am not sure where the rain is that the weather forecasters keep calling for. It is not making its way up here. I will keep you posted on any trail updates. I am still hearing that Boulevard has a couple of tricky sections. You will still want ice crampons if you hike this trail. The north faces of the mountain are not melting as fast. I hope everyone is enjoying spring. Chris and I will be hiking down tomorrow night for some much needed r&r. I am excited to see what flowers are blooming on the other trails. I know that under all of that snow, there are a few Trillium waiting to bloom. That is how I measure when spring has arrived on the mountain. The 60 degree temperatures have gone a long way in helping spring arrive. Yesterday turned out to be another beautiful day on the mountain. It is amazing how different everything looks from a week ago. The weather channel is calling for showers today. We sure do need it. That would help those Trillium find their way out of the snow. Who knew that seeing patches of dirt and grass would be such a lovely thing? The snow is leaving the top of the mountain and you can now see the ground. There are still areas where the snow is deep. Chris and I hiked down Rainbow yesterday to see how the snow was. It is pretty deep in some spots. We wanted to see if the llamas could make it up. I am afraid it is going to be little while longer. The high yesterday was 58 with a low of 40. It is staying pretty warm up here. A good day of rain would help things considerably. Easter Sunday is starting out to look like a beautiful day. I am sure we will see a lot of hikers on the mountain today.
