"Luxury is not a necessity to me, but beautiful and good things are. " - Anais Nin Temperatures hit 70 degrees on the mountain yesterday. It was a great day for hike. Chris and I hiked out Boulevard a little ways to check trail conditions. They seemed to be fine. The low last night was 49. The winds are whipping around today. So far, there are blues skies. I was hiking in shorts and a t-shirt. It is crazy to think it is not even the middle of April. We could still get another good snow before spring has officially landed. I will take the nice weather for now.
Yesterday turned out great once the clouds moved out. The high was an amazing 62 degrees. The low last night was 46. Looks like we may have another spring day on our hands. It is hard to believe it is April and the weather could change on a dime and bring in snow. Let's hope the spring stays.
Our new crew member is getting settled in. His name is Walt Andrews and he is from Lascassas, Tennessee. Chris and I hiked back up the mountain yesterday. I was not sure what I was going to be reporting today. So, with that being said, I am thrilled to report WE ARE OPEN FOR BUSINESS!!! There will be no disruption of services. The roads are open and all trails are open. So put your pack on and come on up to see us!!! By the way, the Alum Cave trail is in great shape. The temperatures have been pretty high for this time of year. The high yesterday was 58 with a low of 50. I am not sure about the other trails, but if I had to guess, I would say they are in good shape. Hope this helps with your planning. See you up top.
We are proud to announce the engagement of Ian and Kristi! Ian popped the big question their first night on the mountain and have decided to celebrate every year after up here! Congratulations! We have had the most beautiful weather! Yesterday was amazing, reaching almost 50 degrees. With it only reaching 38 overnight. It was so nice to be able to see the city lights when I woke up this morning. It gave me hope for another nice day! And sunrise left me without want. Everyone is looking forward to a new crew member hiking up today. Stay tuned to meet Walt! I hope your day off the mountain is as wonderful as ours will be! Kristi Weaver and Ian Marshall of Atlanta, GA Glorious Morning! We have another beautiful day high on top! Last night was very cold, 18, and during the day didn't get much warmer, 24. However, today the sun is shining and getting much more moderate. Trying not to be redundant, I've selected a sunset and sunrise photo to share with you. Notice: There is still much snow and lots of ice! Most slush will re-freeze overnight. Please be prepared when hike up the next few days. Believe it or not but this is a completely unedited photo! Taken at sunset My first glimpse of light this morning We now have about 2" of snow accumulation and seems to have quit for the time being. I awoke to a winter-like wonderland this morning. Who would have thought there would be snow today after running around in sandals and 60 degrees yesterday? Overnight the temperature dropped dramatically down to 26 when I started preparing breakfast and has since reached 20. We have prepared for winter again. As for the storm yesterday, everyone made it safely to the top before the storm hit around dinner. I am working on my cloud terminology. I believe these are swelling cumulus clouds! Scott wanted to show you his "domestic" skills. Check out his cookies! You need to try one! John can't keep his hands off the cookies! Just wanted to let everyone know...
We currently have 1 1/2" of snow and hasn't stopped yet! Please be prepared with warm clothes, ample food and crampons if you plan to visit us today! Check back later for more! Have a great day! It was another beautiful start to the day here. I was happily surprised to wake to much warmer weather and clear skies despite the heavy, high winds. The low was only 45 degrees last night. Yesterday, we saw beautiful sunny skies with a high near 60. We were lucky to complete our mini-airlift in the morning before the winds picked up. There is another wind advisory today with rain and thunderstorms expected later in the day. I have heard that the temperatures will be dropping with the front moving in. So, anyone hiking up today or tomorrow plan for all kinds of weather (rain, snow or sun). We had a"mini" airlift to bring in some construction supplies. Another beautiful sunset. Can't wait for later sunset times so I can head up high to Cliff Tops for better views!
Finally some wonderful weather atop this beautiful rock. Yesterday became one of the nicest days in a while and today is turning out to be twice as nice! Even though yesterday was only 34 degrees, the sun helped to really make us feel warmer. Over night it only got down to 26. With the bad weather moving out, "we" were able to give the guests a nice sunset. Here's the view from dining room porch! It sure has been a wonderful weekend! This was the best part of my morning...
Luckily, we awoke to only 1/2" of snow this morning. The high yesterday reached only 26 with the low last night around 20. Be advised there is a wind advisory for today. Here are a few photos I selected from around camp yesterday. The first shows our sense of humor high on this mountain. Please bear with me over the next week as I learn my way around the blog world! I hope you have a great weekend!
