It snowed overnight! A 31 day was overcast, moving the clouds along for an amazing view of the sunset. A clear night transformed into a 23 degree mist, gathering snow on our doorsteps. Right now it is misty and cold. Hwy 441 Newfound Gap Road, access road to Alum Cave and Boulevard trails is currently closed. Check NPS twitter feed for updates:https://twitter.com/smokiesroadsnps. Cherokee Orchard Road for Rainbow Falls and Bullhead is open as is Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail for Trillium Gap Trail. If you venture up here today please pack warm, waterproof, gaitered, and bring foot- gear (ice traction will be needed).
Safety above all else guys! Watch out your fellow hikers also. We thought the snow would wait a few days but no, it thrives on surprises. 38 turned to 26 overnight, and windy to top it off! Heavy rain last night turned into fat snow flakes the encased camp with ice. It's slippery up here guys! If you have a reservation with us, please call us if you cancel.
Bring foot traction guys, it might be slippery near the top! it only reached 40 then dropped again to 21. Apparently it's supposed to snow up here over the weekend! Any guests who are planning on coming up should pack warm, waterproof, bring your gaiters and your footwear-- it sounds like a doozy! Please be safe if you decide to come up, it's so much colder up here than it is down there so pack accordingly.
If you choose not to venture up call Christi at the office and let us know! Weather fluctuations are insane! We thought it would stay nice after a sunny 53 day but low and behold it dropped down to 19 overnight! That's all types of cold. And windy. Bizarre! We have a diverse bunch of guests who come up here, it's fantastic.
Met a lady baker and her husband who know the real deal about cakes, a venison taco master, a vegetarian wonder, and a cool lady from Denmark! You never know who you'll meet up here at LeConte! A very cold but sunny 46 gave way to to an overnight of 33. Right now it is wonderfully sunny and warm. And it's too pleasant to not be outside.
That's all to say, gotta go enjoy the sun! Yesterday was crazy! So many hikers came up yesterday to enjoy the beautiful, but extremely chilly weather. A high of 35 was replaced with a low of 14, the day has decided to stay on the frigid side. It really was amazing to see all the people up here for the first time!
It is great seeing new guests and hikers up here, but please remember to pack out ALL of your trash. Many of our guests mentioned seeing a lot of trash along the trails and the crew found cigarette butts, wrappers, bottles, and food waste around the lodge. Keeping the trails neat and natural is everyone's responsibility, don't make a mess for someone else to clean up. Huge kudos to the sports team who hiked up today and collected as they went! You are much appreciated. The mist is very reluctant to leave us! Rainy morning gave way to a sunny 52, the 28 night giving us a taste of things to come over the weekend. It's going to be cold outside! Any guests coming up within the next four days need to pack for chilly, chilly weather. Bring the micro spikes just in case, you never know what's going to happen up here! For all of those who were worried about Herbert II, he was located hiding in the tall grasses, along with some items from the neighbors. Thank you for your concern, it was a tearful reunion.
Quick note. For those who park at the Trillium Gap head, please respect the " Authorized parking only" signs, it makes the llamas boys so much happier when they know they can park where they need to! We had some crazy weather yesterday! Winds knocking people over, torrential rain, misty, mud, you name it! All of the guests made it up here safely, albeit a bit on the drenched side. Did you know that Mt LeConte is actually an active volcano? http://www.visitmysmokies.com/blog/smoky-mountains/active-volcano-discovered-under-great-smoky-mountains/ It's llama day!
They'll be coming up Trillium Gap today and will be up by lunch. You can watch them from the back porch of the dining hall at a safe distance-- no danger of being spit on! If you come across any fallen trees please let us know! LL out. |
