A frequent question is how do I charge my laptop. I thought I would share our solar information with you. The lodge has four sets of solar panels to run different items on the mountain. We have a solar system set up in our wood shed that runs any power tools we may need during building projects. We have a solar panel that runs our water pump. There is a panel that charges batteries to operate our incinerator, which burns our trash. We have a set of panels that charge batteries that charges other items such as our cell phone, meat slicer, and my laptop. We depend on the sun to bring us our electricity. It is a great system. Due to mother nature, we do have to watch our intake. As most of you know, LeConte gets quite a bit of cloud coverage. For the most part, it provides us with a enough power to take care of day to day operations. Kay Gevedon had the bright idea to take all of her LeConte t-shirts and make a beautiful quilt with them. I thought it would be nice to share this idea in case you were trying to figure out what to do with all of the shirts you collected over the years.
Yesterday was a great day on the mountain. The high reached 66. It cooled off to around 52 later in the evening. The guests enjoyed firework displays all over the valley. People ask how we get supplies up the mountain almost every day. I guess you could say this is one way. John volunteered to run down the mountain and hike up a new sink for our laundry room. Thanks John.
I hope everyone is having a great July 4th holiday with family and friends. The crew is looking forward to an evening of watching the fireworks down in the valley. The mountain is soon to be transformed. I thought I would give you some before and after shots of the amazing flowers we have growing on top of LeConte. The coneflowers, beebalm, monks hood, turk's cap lilies, and filmy angelica are all about to bloom up top. The days have been sunny and pleasant. Yesterdays high was 65 with a low around 50.
For those of you following our bear situation, the rangers are pretty sure they caught our bear down in the Greenbrier area of the park. We have not seen any more bear activity since the bear was caught, so we have reason to believe this was the LeConte bear. Summer on the mountain is a busy time. We get a lot of families make the hike to the top and spend the night. Believe it or not, the kids get up here and still have tons of energy to explore the mountain until the sun goes down. It is fun to listen to the sounds of the kids playing hide and seek, turning over rocks looking for salamanders, or playing tag. The sounds of summer makes its way to Mt. LeConte as well. I posted a picture of some Junco eggs about a week ago. Imagine my surprise to come back from days off and find the nest full of chicks. They were sleeping peacefully waiting on momma to come feed them. I will keep you posted on their progress. It is so much fun to watch nature change on the mountain.
It was a chilly hike up yesterday. The high was 62 with a low last night of 52. The clouds hung around and kept things nice and chilly. Today is looking like another fine day up top. |
