Whew! The cold is kicking in, 48/28 being the temps recently. Bring layers! Still no rain in the forecast, a chance on Friday but otherwise it should be sunny. Unfortunately, some of our views around camp are stifled by smoke, the air quality is not great so if anyone is hiking up they should bring bandanas to cover their lower face, and definitely should pace themselves. It gets frosty around camp at night too!
The super moon is tonight and everyone should go out and see it! Llamas today and Wednesday. It's our last full open week of the season everyone, it's been a blast! It is cold up here guys! We were glad to have the sun up yesterday , warming up to a 50, then dropping down to 32 at night. It was 23 not too long ago, pack your layers guys! The wind chill is very ...err...chilly, so thermal gloves and ear coverings are strongly advised. Since daylight savings the days are much shorter too, you might want to bring up headlamps if you get a late start on the trails. It hasn't rained for quite a bit now and since it is the dry season up here we are being extremely careful with our water usage.
We are able to fill up water bottles in the kitchen but the outside spigots have been closed for right now as are the guest toilets. Sections of the AT are out of water also so if you are planning on hiking around that area bring extra water! And please, if you are camping or staying at any of the shelters, DO NOT START ANY FIRES! It is too dry so please refrain. Thank you to all our veterans this weekend! Greetings valley dwellers! It's a cold and dry one out there today! Perfect for curling up by the heater with a little bit of hot chocolate. With all of those fires happening in the area, we have our fingers crossed for some rain or snow before the end of the season. Our water spigot is still available, but if you are planning a hike up soon please be mindful of the water shortage. Many shelters on the AT are closed due to the lack of water. Cold weather gear is a must for hikes up for the rest of the year! The current temperature is 30 and the low last night was 32. BRRRR! Only two weeks left this season! Happy hiking. Love, Turnip Jess, chopping away at those tomatoes for tonight
A Sunny Sunday with a chance of..smoke.
We have a bright and sunny day up here at the lodge. Traffic is good around here and another busy weekend is winding down. This leaves us with just two more weekends left on the season. Fall has come and gone pretty quickly this year. Walt and Matt are keeping the kitchen ticking and Pauline is working the office today. Jess went on a day run to the bluffs down alum cave trail. Alison and myself are off the afternoon and relaxing from the weekend and trying to keep up with NFL as best possible from up here today. Alan and the llamas made a trip up Trillium Gap Trail this morning and either he forgot to change his clock last night or he was really speeding up the trail today as he arrived earlier than usual. Bonnie brings the llamas up again tomorrow as well as trips for the boys on Thursday and Friday of this week so watch out for them on trillium gap this week. Alan brought to our attention, what we crew thought had maybe been some sort of cloud inversion, was actually a group of forest fires and we were just seeing the cloud shelf of smoke. Now our sunny day has somewhat turned smokey. The smoke has reached the top of the mountain. The temps are 48 currently with clouds/smoke among us.Yesterdays High was 51 and low was 30. If you are coming up this week remember to pack layers. The night time hours are getting pretty chilly and frost is common this week in the mornings. And as always be safe coming up! See you at the top! -Tate Whew! Humid and hot down below, humid and chilly up here, pack layers guys! We had a partially cloudy 60/39 day yesterday, and today was extremely chilly with cloud cover most of the time. It appears as though we might get into some colder weather over the weekend, it might be a hot hike down below but up here it might be quite brisk!
Llamas to to tomorrow! Halloween was a pleasant 57/43 day, mildly humid, with plenty of costumes, peanut butter desserts, body parts, skeletons... Not to mention the annual crew pumpkin carving contest!!! There is a strong possibility of rain Thursday afternoon so pack accordingly!
We also might have a chillier weekend so be sure to bring layers. Llamas tomorrow and Friday! |
