Good Morning,
The chill sort of snuck up on us last night. As quickly as the sun dipped behind the horizon for a gorgeous sunset, the temperatures wasted no time in dropping into the 20's. We bottomed out at 23 degrees last night, coming after yesterday's high of 46. What precip the clouds managed to squeeze out Thursday turned out to be a meager 0.03" of rainfall. Conditions are mostly clear this morning and should persist throughout the day. You'll definitely want those layers, hats, and gloves though as the wind coming over the mountain cuts into whatever warmth the sun is mustering. Have a great start to the Veterans Day weekend.

Good Morning,
We're sitting in a soupy fog for the moment, with the clouds giving off the lightest of mists. There was a brief shower very early this morning that added 0.1" of precipitation. Yesterday's high temperature was 46 degrees, and our low for the period was 36. Despite that, it's dropped into the lower 30's since, but not cold enough to cause this mist to turn into anything flaky. The clouds should eventually clear out by this afternoon as the system to the south pushes through. Conditions for this coming weekend look favorable, although a bit chillier, so be sure and pack those warm layers if a summit is in your plans. Have a great rest of the day. Good Afternoon, The skies have been doing a tug-of-war in recent days, with periods of rain broken up by patches of blue sky like the one we're enjoying currently. The downpour lasted most of Tuesday morning, and then a brief shower passed through early this morning. Another 1.8" of rainfall was received by the mountain yesterday, and it had all of the creeks swelling. Crossings today should be much calmer, but expect plenty of wet places along the trails for the time being. Temperatures were mild, as our high came in at 49 degrees followed by a low of 40. Again, we've spent all of today in the 40's thus far. We're well into November now, and amazingly just two weeks remain in the season before we close up shop. What fall color remains in the Smokies can be found in the park's lowest elevations. As far as what to expect on Mt. LeConte, there's a lot more gray with openings in the trees, which will be the case for the next several months on these slopes. Your eyes tend to catch different things in the woods once the leaves have gone away. As was the case yesterday, the rain brought on numerous wet weather creeks and cascades that could be seen all around the valley of the West Prong.
Now that we've made the time change, we're also bouncing one of our meal times to best allow overnight guests the opportunity to see sunset. Now through the end of the season, supper will be served hot at 6:15 PM after sunset takes place. With sunrise happening earlier, we are now back to serving guests breakfast at the standard time of 8:00 AM. The llamas are also still on their Wednesday/Friday/Sunday schedule in case you're hoping to catch them in action one last time. Just six more trips for our favorite fuzzy packers! Have a great afternoon. We had a lovely atmospheric 50/45 day, clouds blanketing us with the occasional drizzle. Overnight we received .68” of rain and it is pounding on the windows right now. Bring your rainjackets!
This weather should continue till Friday so plan accordingly. Llamas are scheduled to come up tomorrow. If anyone in the next few days travels up Trillium Gap trail please let us know if there is any damage or fallen trees on the trail. The llamas and their wranglers appreciate the heads up! Stay dry everyone! It seems as though the valley has lucked out with the beautiful weather. Besides a few spots of sunshine yesterday for a split second we were in the clouds looking down at the shadowed valley on a dry 52/45 day.
Starting Monday we will receive quite a bit of rain, the trend continuing through Friday. Rain jackets, umbrellas, and extra layers are strongly recommended. The llamas are scheduled to come up Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday this week, weather permitting. Happy Monday! We'll, we certainly feel refreshed up on the mountain. A partially sunny 52/45 day ended with heavy showers amounting to .73”, ending sometime in the early morning.
So far we have been stuck in the clouds with an occasional glimpse of the valley below, but rain is definitely going to hit sometime today. We are waiting with baited breath. Expect rain showers in the forecast starting Monday, tomorrow looks promising with sunny weather. Hopefully our llamas friends stay dry on the hike up tomorrow! Good day!
A partially cloudy 53/39 gave way to clouds overnight, leaving us in the fog with a trace of rain. We are expecting rain starting today through the weekend so make sure to pack your umbrellas and rain jackets! Checking the forecast for Gatlinburg ahead of time is also helpful, just expect it to be cooler up here than it is down there, sometimes the temperature differences are just enough to warrant another layer or so. Our llamas friends are coming up today along with Alan, make sure to give the boys room on the trail! Happy Friday! Howdy!
After hiking in snow and ice it's nice to see the ground again. Although it is a bit of a slushy mess these 46/37 temps and partially cloudy days are certainly making the outside a bit more bearable and much nicer for our llama friends. It is chilly up here at night, last night was especially blustery, so make sure to pack those extra layers if you are staying with us. Sometimes the breeze picks up quite a bit during sunset and makes it memorable for an entirely different reason. Due to our elevation and location we get to see plants and wildlife that you don’t see often, if at all. The mosses and lichens are particular favorites. Enjoy! Good Morning, It seems just like yesterday we were slinging loads beneath a helicopter getting ready for the 2017 season. Yet here we are...the beginning of November and marching down the home stretch toward Closing Day and Thanksgiving. Time just seems to tick faster and faster with each passing year. So let's make the most of it! If you're waiting for that opportunity to pay us a visit high above Tennessee, hopefully you can find time in these three remaining weeks to make the climb. We saw more of the snow melt yesterday, as our high temperature for the day reached an otherwise toasty 46 degrees. Overnight lows once again hovered just above the freezing mark. What snow remains is patchy, but continue to use caution in icy places packed down by numerous footsteps until all is gone. Today should be very similar as far as temps and skies go, so enjoy it if you're looking to explore the outdoors. We had some great entries for the annual pumpkin carving contest. Guests enjoyed perusing the creative designs during dinner, casting their ballots for the one they deemed fit to be crowned the 2017 champion. In the end, Heather's tasteful and artistic pumpkin creation garnered the most votes. Congrats to Heather, and "good show" by those crew members who submitted pumpkins in this year's contest. A special thanks to Bonnie for picking out such fabulously carve-able pumpkins, and to the llamas for lugging them up the hill for our enjoyment along with the necessary supplies.
Have a great start to the new month! |
