Good Morning,
Starting the week off with a mix of clouds and sunshine, but conditions are expected to clear up as the day goes on. Temps are fantastic as we wake up to readings in the upper 40s. We might even tap 60° for a high today making for some delightful hiking weather. Beginning Tuesday afternoon the rain chances return to our area and should last well into Thursday. We’ll also experience some breezy conditions for the next several days as well. Eta doesn’t seem to know when it wants to vacate the Gulf, so it isn’t a concern of ours at this moment, although we’ll still keep an interested eye on its development. Now through the remainder of the season, guest supper will be served at 6:00 PM, as this allows our overnight guests ample time to attend a stunning sunset at Cliff Tops before getting served in their respective cabins. Breakfast is still at 8:00 AM as sunrise takes place well beforehand. Have a great day.

Good Morning,
Looking like the upper elevations could see a mix of sun and clouds today, but nonetheless it should be a wonderful day to get outside and enjoy the mountains. Still looking at superbly mild temps this late in the calendar year, spending our time in the 40s and 50s. Reminder that today and tomorrow could see breezy conditions even with the sunshine. By the latter half of Tuesday and into the holiday we could finally see the return of rain. It’s still too early to know where Eta will track once it makes it landfall from the Gulf and whether it has southern Appalachia in its sights. In the meantime, the trails are in great shape without any icy hazards, but be mindful of where you step in fresh leaf litter. Every so often they can obscure a gnarly root or slick rock. Have a great end to the week. Good Morning,
It’s going to be a gorgeous weekend in the mountains. The sun is out and shining everywhere. Temps up top are already in the mid 40s and we’ll have no problem ascending into the upper 50s again today. The rest of the weekend and next couple days are expected to be nice as well. Beginning this evening the winds will start to pick up. Between then and when rain returns in time for Veterans Day, the mountain could experience wind gusts upwards of 25 mph. So be aware of your surroundings once things get a little breezy during your hike, otherwise conditions for hiking should be quite enjoyable. Have a great day. Good Morning,
Another beautiful day in the mountains is on the docket this Friday. Any early cloud cover to start the day should clear out for abundant sunshine through the afternoon. Conditions should also remain mild as our temperature range swings from the mid 30s at night to the 50s during the day. There is the still the potential for some hidden ice in the cooler shaded places on the trails, so be sure to watch your foot placement closer to the top. Otherwise trails are mostly clear and dry. Down to about 10.5 hours of daylight these days, and it gets darker sooner in the lowlands compared to the summit. Please plan your day hike accordingly and come prepared for the cooler climate once the sun goes away. Good Morning,
It’s shaping up to be another mild mid-autumn day in the mountains, although there won’t be as much abundant sunshine today. Clouds are expected to increase as the hours pass, but there’s no call for any precipitation. Hopefully it doesn’t spoil what has been a stunning streak of sunsets for our guests. Temps will continue to roll between highs in the upper 40s/lower 50s and bottom out near freezing these next several days. Still looking like an enjoyable first full November weekend to get out and explore. The leaf change is just about gone in our neck of the woods. Any remaining color would be happening in the lowest elevations mostly out of sight of our various trails. The cooler clear air is making for some stunning views out over the horizons though. Have a great day. Good Afternoon,
We’re basking in the beautiful sunshine early and often this November. Temps have gradually climbed away from that sharp wintry burst we experienced recently. Our lows are closer to the freezing mark now and the unbroken afternoon sun we’re getting is allowing temps to get into the 40s and maybe 50s. The next several days clear through the weekend look to be more of the same. Due to the freeze/thaw nature of the evenings, one can still count on some ice formation along the upper reaches of the trails, especially in the shaded portions. So tread carefully the higher up you get and consider having those traction devices handy these remaining weeks of the season. The Trails Forever team plans to conclude their work on Trillium Gap next Monday. That means on Tuesday, November 10th Trillium Gap Trail will reopen to the public on a daily basis. Of course keep in mind that during the winter months the Roaring Fork road closes, so hikers hoping to utilize that trail have to start from the less popular Cherokee Orchard trailhead. Have a great rest of the day. Good Morning,
There was no easing into it. Yesterday morning’s mild start in the mid 40s was the day’s high point. Even with the sun eventually coming out and providing a fabulous sunset later on, the temps continued to slide and the north winds picked up. Once the sun dropped behind the horizon, conditions cooled quickly and continued to do so til day break. Our low temp ...get ready for it... was 11° at reporting time. And if that wasn’t cold enough for you, we’re also getting blasted by winds gusting upward of 40 mph. That puts the wind chills at the lodge as low as -10°. “Brrr” might be an understatement, especially for what is not normal this time of year. These conditions should not be taken lightly. If you don’t have the layers and hiking gear to keep yourself comfortable and safe in such extreme temps, you are putting yourself and others (potential rescuers) at risk. Already yesterday there were several groups of day hikers arriving to the lodge way too late in the afternoon, unaware of the time change’s effect on an earlier sunset and the rapidly decreasing temperatures. Advanced reservations are required to stay overnight at the lodge and we are fully booked every night of the season. If you are banking on snagging a last minute opening as a walk-in this time of year, you are already setting yourself up for failure. Do the research, know your limits, and do everything necessary to have a safe and enjoyable experience in these mountains as winter approaches. Thank you and a have a great start to the week. Good Morning,
November has arrived and so have the winds of winter. Although temps on the mountain aren’t terribly cold yet, we’re heading that way as the day progresses. Winds today and tonight will be quite gusty, up to 40mph predicted, before calming sometime Monday. A Freeze Warning is in place for our area tonight, and wind chills will be driving these temps downward into feeling like single digits. There is a slight chance for precip at times today, but so far it’s been just a mix of clouds and mist. The sun returns to the scene tomorrow and temps should ascend by midweek to create more comfortable hiking conditions. Reminder that starting this evening and lasting through the end of the season guests will be served supper after sunset. Day hikers do not want to be getting caught out in this cold. Look at the forecast in advance of your hike, dress appropriately, and know when to turn around. Temps plummet when dusk hits, and it can get darker sooner in the valleys and deep hollers at the base of the mountain. A special congratulations is in order for our very own Emily Buie and Scott Hengehold on tying the knot yesterday. It was a beautiful day for such a joyful occasion and the crew is elated for them both. Have a great day and stay warm. |
