If a man walk in the woods for love of them half of each day, he is in danger of being regarded as a loafer; but if he spends his whole day as a speculator, shearing off those woods and making earth bald before her time, he is esteemed an industrious and enterprising citizen. As if a town had no interest in its forests but to cut them down! Henry David Thoreau
Morning,
It was another beautiful day yesterday. The high was 47 and it was clear all day. There were some pretty impressive gusts of wind building overnight. The low was 34 and it was 37 & foggy at observation. It's supposed to be grey and rainy for the next 5 days. I had a really strange day yesterday. I couldn't sleep for the first time up here and got up at 2. I read, stargazed and worked on some holiday gifts for my friends. I took a day off hiking and just laid around in the sun. It is crazy how comfortable it was in the grassy junction between Alum & Cliff Tops. It would make a fantastic mattress. I finished my Sunday NYTimes that was supposed to last me all week. Dang. I'm going to spend the day researching if the Cherokees had a snow dance. That should both keep me busy and potentially turn all this rain into something I can ski on. _Morning,
It was another spring day yesterday. The high was 35. The low was 16, but that was yesterday morning. It's gotten warmer as the day has gone on. It was 34 and clear at observation. It looks like it'll be another nice day to be out today. I had a nice, slow morning yesterday. I was fortunate enough to meet Mac, Stew & Ed, a few of the volunteer AT maintainers that help to keep the shelters and privies clean. Thanks for all your hard work guys! I had a short hike about halfway down Alum yesterday. There is some black ice in spots, so beware! I came back up about an hour before sunset and was lucky enough to catch that at Cliff Tops. I had a nice evening catching up with some friends from the AT. I'm looking forward to getting in a hike today before what looks like 3 days of rainy weather. _Morning,
It was a bit of a return to normalcy with some chilly temperatures yesterday. It only crept up to 29. The low last night was 15. It was 16 and clear at observation. It looks like another pleasant day for hiking. The weather.com forecast is calling for 'plentiful sunshine'. I love it when they get creative with their descriptions. Still, beware of black ice on some of the rocks. It may just look like moisture, but it's very slick! I had a really nice run down Alum yesterday morning. I can't believe I'm still able to run down that trail with shorts on! The weather has been nice, just very unexpected. Thanks to everyone who heard my cry for evaporated milk, New York Times, fresh food, etc. and brought me up some treats! It is much appreciated. I spent the remainder of the day finishing up laundry and reading a bit. Safe hiking! too real is this feeling of make believe, too real when i feel what my heart can't conceal.12/17/2011
Morning,
We had a rainy day yesterday. I didn't see another person on the mountain. The high was 42 and the low was 22. It was 22 and clear at observation. We got .85 inches of rain. It looks like we'll have a nice weekend to make up for how nasty yesterday was. Those lucky enough to get an early start to their hike today will be hiking into the clouds, as we're experiencing some inversion up top. It's pretty spectacular. I had a really nice inside day yesterday. I finished Aldo Leopold's 'A Sand County Almanac' and did some laundry. I definitely needed the rest. I ended up sleeping 13 hours last night. I am hoping we get some snow soon. My White Christmas is in jeopardy! Morning,
It was another mild day yesterday. The high was 45. The low was 38. It was 40 and cloudy at observation. There's a near 100% chance of rain, so be prepared for some storms. I had a great hike down Alum yesterday. I'm really starting to notice a difference in my ability to get into a good place mentally and get these big miles covered without effort. I was in a rush to beat what looked like a brewing storm and was able to make it up in 2 hours. I hauled water and plan on spending today primarily catching up on my inside activities after a big week of hiking. Be careful in the rain today! Morning,
It was yet another bizarrely warm day yesterday. The high was 52. The low was 36. It was 38 and blustery at observation. It looks like there's a chance of afternoon showers today, so be ready for some rain. I had a nice hike out to the Jumpoff yesterday. I'd never been there before and it is definitely one of the most well named spots in the park. Thanks for the recommendation, Bill! I relaxed after I got back around 4 and did some reading. I'm looking forward to focusing on some of my indoor activities as the rain moves in these next few days. I'm going to be doing a few chores around camp, reading and starting my first whittling project. Safe hiking everyone! Can anything be so elegant as to have few wants and to serve them one's self, so as to have somewhat left to give, instead of being always prompt to grab? It is more elegant to answer one's own needs, than to be richly served; inelegant perhaps it may look to-day, and to a few, but it is an elegance forever and to all. Emerson
_Morning,
It was gorgeous yesterday and looks to be much of the same today. The snow has just about melted off. The high was 46 and the low was 36. It was 42 and a bit hazy at observation. I had a nice hike down Alum yesterday morning. I met Tim at the trailhead and he was kind enough to help me do some chores around town before hiking back up in the afternoon. Thanks again, Tim! I relaxed all afternoon and watched the meteor shower for as long as I could stay awake. It was a very calm evening on the mountain. I have all my winter accessories and am just waiting on the snow. I received my skis yesterday (thanks Tom!) and had my buddies hike up my snowshoes this weekend. I was looking at my photos from my trip last MLK day and can't wait for it to begin! Safe hiking! Morning,
It was another mild evening. The low was only 34. The snow is only patchy at this point, but there will likely be a few icy sections on the trails. The high was 42 yesterday and it was 37/hazy at observation. I had a great hike down Bullhead with a few friends yesterday morning. We got lunch at the Smoky Mountain Brewery and then they took off. I had a great hike back up Rainbow Falls. I'm really looking forward to catching the Geminid Meteor shower this evening. I mistimed the lunar eclipse, so I'm really hoping for some clear skies tonight. Safe hiking! Morning,
It was a very mild night last night. The low was only 31. It was 34 and a bit hazy at observation. The high yesterday was 41. A good bit of the snow has melted away, but there are still some icy sections on the trails. I hiked out to Charlie's Bunion yesterday with a few friends. We were able to watch sunrise at Myrtle Point, then hit the trail. We didn't see another person on the Boulevard trail. We had a great view out there and were able to enjoy lunch on the Bunion. I'm hiking my friends down Bullhead today so that we can grab lunch in town. I'll head back up Alum this afternoon. Safe hiking! Morning,
It was one of the most beautiful days I've ever seen yesterday. The high was only 28, but it was still as could be and the snow always seems to make the cold less bitter. The overnight low was 14. It was 18 and clear at observation. I hiked down to Rainbow Falls yesterday. After about a mile, I descended below the clouds. It was misty and gray at the Falls. When I came back up, it was clear and the clouds still hadn't burnt off. I've never seen inversion last this long. It made for a spectacular sunset. Thanks to my friends for hiking me up all sorts of goodies & my early Christmas gifts. It's been great seeing familiar faces. Thanks for the new vest, Mom! I am planning on hiking out to Charlie's Bunion this morning. Hope everyone enjoys the glorious weather! Safe hiking! |
