Big Storm System Made for an Interesting Afternoon

6/14/2013

The calm before the storms.
What a wet day we had yesterday. We did see some of that rain they were calling for. Most of the damage was done to the north of us. There were tornado warnings for the lower elevations around Pittman Center and Cosby. I will say it was a bit creepy when our phones were going off with tornado warnings because we were hitting the cell towers in Pittman Center. The fog actually cleared up and it was a beautiful morning. You could see the storm systems rolling in. We knew we were in for a rockin' and rollin' afternoon. Most of our rain came in a twenty minute time frame. We received about an inch within that time. The total was 1.22". The storm system cooled things down a bit. The low last night was 45º with a high of 67º. We are socked in again this morning. We have hope of seeing sun a little later in the morning.

My husband, his brother, our son, and two of our son's friends will be there today (from Ohio). Hoping for some clearing for them!

I have received 10.85 inches of rain in my rain gauge, with neighbors getting over 10" as well, since last Wednesday June 5th.

We are in Pittman Center about next to Greenbrier.

Glad everyone is ok, and Allyson it is a good thing you didn't bet with me; you would owe me a no bake cookie.

I saw the weather and warnings for y'all. I bet it was pretty intense up there. Humidity broke here in Chattanooga. Sweet relief. Enjoy the weekend! Love you guys!

We're headed up that way on Tuesday morning and the long range forcast for the area tells us we may get a bit damp on our climb to the top. But, once we get there, the reward will be well worth the effort - dry clothes, snug cabin, great food & plenty of smiling faces. Ah, the good life. May the mountain weather gods smile favorably upon us all... Happy Trails...

It looks like some pretty heavy damage across the northern end of GSMNP from these storms....AGAIN!
It is unreal what the Park has gone through in the last few years. I hope all those injured are able to get help quickly.

Agreed... Mother Nature has really been throwing a lot of tantrums lately. Hopefully she'll be in a better mood soon. Be safe when you venture out... and go prepared. See y'all on the trail.

Couldn't believe we had tornado warnings/watches over here in Maggie Valley. I was thinking about the lodge and everyone up there when it was happening yesterday

Six of us were almost to the Hugo slide on Boulevard Trail Thursday when the heavy rain hit. Water four to six inches deep was roaring down the trail. We were soaked, but got dried out in time for dinner. Great visit. Blue skies to hike home via Alum Bluff Friday.

Where is the Hugo slide? I haven't heard that term, unless you mean the huge slide where the cable leads across the face a couple hundred feet below Myrtle Point.

OK, let me guess. That is in the headwaters of Boulevard Prong, between the left and right forks. But whether or not that is correct, I'd be interested in hearing about the Hugo slide and how it got its name.
