Fall? Already?

8/15/2013

What a sight to behold. Watching the sun come up over the horizon never grows old. We did see a little bit of sun yesterday. I had enough to charge the computer and submit a post. The sun quickly hid behind the clouds. We are hoping for a little longer visit today. So far, so good. I think fall came in while we were covered in clouds. It was a chilly day up top. The high was 55º with a low of 48º. Don't forget to bring those layers if you are hiking up to stay the night.

I'll think good thoughts for drier weather for the region. And not just because I'm coming down in a month either., ; )

Has anybody ever stayed at the Mt. Pisgah Inn on the Blue Ridge Parkway? I made a spur of the moment decision to make a reservation for my last night in the mountains and spend an afternoon on the trails there. Saw the place some years ago and always planned on staying there in the future. I think it's about a 90-mile drive from Gatlinburg, via 441 and the Parkway. The view of the Blue Ridge from the room decks looks amazing.

Kent, Pisgah Inn is a wonderful place to stay and great food. The hiking trails are wonderful in the area.

Sounds great, Crystal, thanks for the comment. I do recall reading somewhere that the food is the best on the parkway.

Double check road closures before you go. A big chunk of the BRP is closed due to something of a washout, a crack in the pavement.

I did see a road closure east of Asheville, but everything looks good from mile marker 355.3 south for now. I'll definitely keep abreast of the road conditions.

Our local hiking club has an outing this week-end to the Pisgah National Forest and some of the people are staying at the Inn. You didn't say when you are going but if it is a couple of weeks out then check the trip report on our web site at sipseywilderness.org. A report should be posted by the middle of next week.

My reservation is for September 19. I'll definitely check out your website, thanks. :)

I live in Maggie Valley, NC so Im not to far from Pisgah Inn. Ive eat there many times. The food is good and even if it weren't that would be ok because the views are amazing. I have taken my car club up there (around 100 people) to eat and everyone was impressed. The hiking is great in Pisgah national Forest over there. You can hike to the top of Pisgah mountain from the Inn. There is a big TV tower up there and the views are awesome. I would love to stay up there and watch sunset/sunrise from my balcony

The hike up to the summit figures into my plans. I suspect the views are awe-inspiring.

Yeah, I'm looking forward to relaxing on the deck and enjoying the view. I checked out a few traveler picks on Tripadvisor which inspired me to make the reservation.

I am looking so forward to hiking there in Oct. I plan to do an up and back hike. I wont be staying at the lodge this time but hope to next time. I have never done this hike before and was wondering how much time I would need to hike up and back in the same day? I am a runner and cyclist so I think my fitness would be fine. Just wondering, thanks.

What trail are you taking?

If you are fit as a fiddle and hold a normal sort of easy pace figure:
3up +2.7 down Alum Cave. Add top time. Figure you want to be at the bottom 45 minutes before sunset.
4up+3.6 down Rainbow or Bullhead or Trillium Gap
6up Boulevard including a long lunch at The Jumpoff 5 down
6up Brushy Mountain, 5 down
You'll likely do much better if you push it, but it's not a bad idea to look around a little!

Thanks for the replies, not sure exactly what trails I will be taking just yet. I wanted to make sure that I could do it all in one day, sounds like I should be able to and have a little time to look around!

I would like to do the hardest trail up, and the easiest trail down, if that helps...
