What started out to be a beautiful day, ended with a symphony of thunder and lightning. The thunderstorms moved in and lasted for most of the afternoon and evening. It just goes to show how unpredictable the weather can be in the mountains. We have seen a lot of spring breakers who are completely unprepared for the elements. All I can say is be prepared for any type of weather in the spring. You never know what kind of surprises you will find in the backcountry.
The temperature was pleasant yesterday. The high was 65 with a low of 45. It is currently raining.

It doesn't take but one time of getting caught unprepared in the mountains to decide that a little extra weather gear does NOT weigh you down!

Found that out the hard way. First time we hiked up there, I didn't have enough clothing and I was trying out a new shirt that didn't wick moisture away. I felt like I was going to freeze. Luckily I was able to purchase a hoodie up top. Saved my butt. Go prepared now.

Better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it.

My wife Mary and myself hiked to the lodge yesterday 3/20 and the most distrubing sight(s) were the trash left behind by some people. We went up Alum Cave and almost anywhere you look you see bottles , gum ,candy, toliet paper , underwear, etc. please pack it out. We can only cary out so much.

Had an awesome stay on the 20th with you guys! Our first time to not have to turn around and hike back down. Loved every minute of it. Hope to get to stay again soon and maybe catch a sunset or sunrise next time - even though the storm was cool too! Comments are closed.
