Emerson speaks of a plus quantity being essential to every hero - that is a feeling of superiority to all circumstances however solemn, a carelessness, a dash of recklessness, which implies a certain disrespect for every thing but one's own will - (I don't father this amplification on Emerson) and men who have the buoyancy of will may doubtless go far with it. William James
Morning y'all,

It's a beautiful, spring morning up top. The high yesterday reached 38 degrees, although it felt much warmer in the afternoon sun. The overnight low was 29 degrees. It was 29 degrees and clear at 7am. The mountain received no new precipitation and there is no snow remaining up top. The trails are almost entirely clear.

Spectacular pinks, purples and oranges tint the early morning clouds. It is a fitting good bye view from my cabin window. I'll be taking off early tomorrow morning, the blog will return when Chris & Allyson are back on the mountain sometime next week. Enjoy the Smokies for me while I ramble northward to my beloved New England mountains!

JP...thanks for your work and writings this winter....If you dont mind...what mountains do you go to when you leave here...and do you do basically the same thing that you did here at Leconte Lodge. Either way...your job and the daily doings that you get to do are awesome. Enjoy the summer...

Hey Mike,
I'll be working for the Randolph Mountain Club in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. I'll be a caretaker at Gray Knob cabin and then will be working on their summer trail crew.
Best,
JP

I just looked up that cabin where you will be the caretaker and the history and their operation is very extraordinary yet simple. It is a one man crew and reservations are not accepted. Why can't everyday life be like that. Enjoy your time there this summer and hopefully you will be back here next winter.

May your good tidings return to you ten fold. A good heart and kind spirit will always win out over the haters and small minds we must endure much too often. I still remain hopeful people will become more enlightened someday. The best to you.

Hey all!
My wife and I (and our recently born son, Dax) are mixing it up this year. Instead of our annual trip to the Smokies, we're going to be visiting family in PA who haven't been able to meet Dax yet. We're going to be taking a few day's detour over to Shanandoah. I wanted to see if any of you guys have hiked/stayed in Shanandoah and had recommendation on day hikes and lodging.

Thanks!

Hello Devin: I have hiked through the Shenandoah area a few times and I'm trying to remember some side hikes to send to you, but cannot locate some of my old notes, etc. I'll intensify my efforts to find something for you. It's a beautiful area !
