Warm Weather on the Mountain

10/24/2012

I love the fact that it is near the end of October and we are experiencing such warm weather for the season. The high yesterday was 60 with a low of 42. I am guessing it will be warmer today since the forecast is calling for the mid 80s down below. Yesterday was a great day for a run. The trails have died down a bit. I guess the fall breaks are over. The crew are anxiously awaiting the arrival of the pumpkins today. It has become a tradition for the crew to each carve a pumpkin and let the guests vote on the best one. The winner gets to sleep in late. That is a big deal around here. We are usually up and at 'em around 7:30 every morning. Looking at the forecast, it seems as though this beautiful weather is going to stick around a few days. This does not hurt my feelings. I can do with out a snow a little longer.

As I sit at my desk getting ready to start another day in 4th grade and feeling a bit stressed, I looked at the daily blog and went ahhh the beauty of those mountains. Not feeling as stressed now! Thanks for the beautiful pic. as always! Happy pumpkin carving!! I would love to see a pic of all the pumpkins. Warm weather again today in central Ohio!! loving it!

Very beautiful picture today. Had to change my screen saver.
That reminds me to bring my pumpkins inside to warm them up a bit so I can scoop the insides out.
I think were going to have a nice day in Michigan today also. Right now its 57 at 8:10am wish it would stay this way, then warm up about March. I could handle that. Rain after today so better get outside and scoop some leaves while I can. Enjoy this beautiful snowless weather while you can. It will be here soon enough.

WOW!! what a view. Allyson, I hope you have this weather all the way up till nov 9th. I have already told you I am gonna bring some snow from Alabama. You remember what it was like to do without snow don't you? My boys are sure counting on getting some when we come up. See you soon.

Colors are past their peak here in Cen. KY; they're all pretty much a general brownish-red hue; temps are about what one would expect for this time of year; Like Debi, I changed my desktop background with your latest photo which looked just great ! I've watched far too much of the current election coverage and am really burned out, so, next week I'm camping in the Park for four or five days and taking several of the day hikes I've been planning, one of which will take me by the lodge hopefully, a least long enough for a short rest; I hope Brian gets his snow. G'day

Thanks Doug, we got it last nov so it would be nice to have some on the ground with clear skies so my wife and youngest could see what myself and the oldest saw last year. BEAUTIFUL

Brian: I don't know which trail you plan on taking up to the lodge, but footing can be treacherous; I believe you're well aware of this, though; On one trip, in Apr 2010 on Easter Sunday along the Alum trail there was plenty of ice and snow in the last mile or so; I had bought a new pair of ice cleats but elected to leave them home. They would have given me only a small advantage, and I've actually never used them. There are some slippery spots on the "upper" sections of Alum where even with the cleats it can be tricky. But I like your attitude: If you make even the poorest of ground conditions "fun" it makes for a great journey ! Perhaps I'll plan a mid-winter snow-on-the-ground hike just to get a feel for those ice cleats.

We are going Alum up and down. My wife has never been on it and my youngest has only been down it. We will be purchasing them some yaktrax before heading up. We almost had ice this past april coming up rainbow. Allyson said it melted off the evening before we came up. And yes, alum is tricky in spots even with "ice walkers" on. I would rather hike in the rain or snow with my family than to be stuck in this office without them. HAPPY TRAILS

I'll heading down in the Smokies on November 7 and plan to hike up to LeConte, on the 8th, via Alum. I bought a pair of Stabilicers that look pretty aggressive. (A hiker experienced in hiking the trail recommended them to me.)

I' guess if the conditions are treacherous, I'll find out. Hopefully I can stay vertical. :)
