HELLO FROM MT. LECONTE!
It’s been a wet and windy day atop the mountain. All this rain does not appear to be letting up anytime soon. The lodge received 0.9 inches of rainfall. The high was 41 and the low was 32. The road remains open into the park. Expect a slog for a hike if you decide to brave the wet weather today. HAPPY TRAILS!

WELCOME TO CLIFF TOPS!
I thought that y’all might getting bored by “WELCOME TO MT LECONTE” every day this winter, so I thought that I’d give you a break! Today I’ll feature CLIFF TOPS. But first let’s check on the weather. Our morning temperature was 33 degrees, with heavy clouds and light rain resulting in 0.15 inches of precipitation. The roads are open this morning. Most of y’all probably already know that the Lodge is “off the grid”. That means that “we don’t get no electricity”—and that means we don’t have television to entertain you during your visit. So what we usually do for excitement and entertainment is to go to Cliff Tops to see the sunset. (Don’t be late!) Yesterday Mother Nature had a “Special Feature” for us called the inversion. That’s when there is a solid layer of clouds below you and clear blue skies above! It doesn’t happen often, so when it does it’s a special treat! Mountains appear like islands in a sea of clouds. You just have to be in the right place at the right time! If you have to get out today, don’t forget your rain gear. HAPPY TRAILS!! WILDCAT/Bert GOOD MORNING!
It looks like it will be a marvelous Monday! The temperature on top of the mountain is 32 degrees. We received 6/10ths of an inch of rain during the night. There is a cloud inversion blanketing the valley below the lodge and the skies above are clear. I believe it will be a great day to take a hike! There were relatively few day hikers reaching the top of the mountain yesterday, I will blame that on all of the Super Bowl parties that were planned for the evening! However, I did meet hikers from as far away as the British Isles. They thought that Gatlinburg was “sensory overload “ and were enjoying the relative peace and quiet of Mt LeConte. I hope that y’all can enjoy some peace and quiet today. HAPPY TRAILS!! WILDCAT/Bert GREETINGS FROM LECONTE!
The current temperature is 35 degrees up here at the lodge. We received 0.85 inches of precipitation last night and early this morning. It was enough rain to turn the trails into small creeks. Several days ago I wrote a blog about UMBRELLAS. This morning as I walked from my cabin to the restroom in the rain with my umbrella I had a few additional thoughts on that subject. First of all in that previous post I advised you to prepare for rain. Now suddenly here it is—almost an inch last night! I thought about all of the times during the past twenty years when I was staying in a shelter and was the only person there with an umbrella. When it would start to rain, suddenly I became the most popular person there because everyone else in the shelter was begging to borrow my umbrella to keep them dry when they went to the privy! When I was hiking out west in areas where there are no trees, other hikers frequently asked to borrow my trusty umbrella to provide them with some sun protection. It’s just beneficial to have an umbrella handy when you need it! Stay dry and have a great day! HAPPY TRAILS!! WILDCAT/Bert Hello, Friends!
It’s 44 degrees here at the lodge this morning and partly cloudy. We had just a trace of precipitation yesterday. I didn’t see much of the sun yesterday. It appears that today will be more of the same. The good news is that the roads and trails are clear. I received a report from a day hiker who hiked Brushy Mountain earlier this week that it has three major blowdowns. It appears that today today wI’ll be a nice quiet day at the lodge. I think that I’ll just pour myself another cup of fresh hot black coffee and wash the dishes. I hope that y’all have a great day! HAPPY TRAILS!! WILDCAT/Bert Hello from LeConte Lodge!
Morning temperature at the lodge is 38 degrees. We received 3/4 of an inch precipitation yesterday—that’s much better than a tornado! I heard that there were severe storms in counties northeast of here and I could see lightning in the clouds in that direction last night. So we have wet trails this morning, but almost all of the ice is melted. Here’s a weather related hiking gear topic that you may not have considered—UMBRELLAS! I think that umbrellas are the best rain gear that has ever been invented. I carry a hiking umbrella that weighs six ounces—that’s less than half of what most raincoats weigh! I don’t get hot and soaked with perspiration while using the umbrella. Umbrellas are less expensive than raincoats. They are quick and easy to put up and take down. And they provide reasonably good protection from hail! I know that some of y’all may think that “real men” don’t carry umbrellas—but it’s worth your serious consideration. The mountains will be receiving some rain in the next few days—stay dry! HAPPY TRAILS!! WILDCAT/Bert Good Morning!
The temperature this morning is 44 degrees. It was cloudy and foggy this morning but the skies appear to be clearing. The mountain received about 0.1” of rain last night, but we should have another nice day today. Naturally after several sunny days the roads are open today. I hope that y’all will enjoy the mountain while you’re able to do so! HAPPY TRAILS!! WILDCAT/Bert HOWDY, FOLKS!
The ice and snow is still slowly diminishing here at the lodge. Even so, I used my traction devices when I ventured down to the spring this morning to fetch more water for the kitchen. There are still a few slick spots in the shady areas. The temperature here this morning was 40 degrees—exactly the same as the two previous mornings. It is cloudy and foggy again here, but hopefully this will burn off again by midday again and we’ll be able to enjoy sunshine again. As usual I hiked up to Cliff Tops again late yesterday afternoon to enjoy a nice sunset. I’m certain that this pleasant weather won’t last forever, but I want to enjoy it while I can! Remember that it is still early February, and winter is not completely over yet. I hope that y’all have a great day! HAPPY TRAILS!! WILDCAT/Bert Greetings from LeConte!
The weather today appears to be a carbon copy of yesterday. That’s a good thing! The most interesting thing that happened yesterday was what appeared to be a forest fire straight west of Cliff Tops at approximately 2:30 PM. It turned out that the Park Service was conducting controlled burns of grass lands in Cades Cove. The fires were mostly extinguished and the smoke clouds dissipated by the time that I took pictures of the sunset. l hope that y’all have a terrific Tuesday! HAPPY TRAILS!! WILDCAT/Bert Hello from Mt LeConte!
The lodge has clear blue skies this morning and the temperature is a balmy 40 degrees. The roads are open but there is still just enough ice on the trails up here at the top to make things slick! Better keep those traction devices with you for another day or two. The mountain is supposed to have a couple of days of fair weather before it starts to rain again. I hope that y’all are able to get out and enjoy the sunshine! HAPPY TRAILS!! WILDCAT/Bert |
