It seems like it was just yesterday that we were heralding May Day, and yet here we are now bidding farewell to another month of the season. For the second year in a row, May has produced far more cloudy and rainy days than not for our favorite mountain, but this final 24 hour stanza is shaping up to give us a sunnier change of pace. Skies over the Smokies are for the most part free of clouds this Saturday, and even though temps are going to be on the cool side this weekend, the air is thick with a haze more reminiscent of summer. An omen perhaps that the hot and humid days we’ve come to expect this time of year are indeed on the way. Greener slopes, longer days, noisy bugs, increased visitor traffic…all the signs are there.
While there remains a slight possibility of a pop up rain shower later today, the odds are greater for hikers to stay dry during their treks (save for any self-produced sweat of course). Sunday should start out decent for us as well, but storm chances look a tad more daunting by tomorrow afternoon. So be sure and plan accordingly if considering a visit to the summit to close out the weekend.

Mornin’ on the penultimate day of May!
Since the holiday, the summit has been stuck in a cloudy and rainy rut. Sunshine and views out over the valley below have simply been infrequent. That pattern is going to continue today and into the weekend, so plan accordingly if a venture to the mountain top is on your agenda these next few days. Although temps are staying mild (40s to 50s), the damp and dreary conditions are going to add a touch of cool to the air, so packing a mix of layers for staying dry and warm isn’t a bad idea while we slowly transition thru the end of spring. It’s looking by Sunday we’ll slowly welcome back sunnier skies and eventually warmer temps in time to have officially kicked off June. As we wind down the month of May, the greenery from base to summit has really thickened. As vegetation grows taller around the lodge, local wildlife like the deer see themselves surrounded by an endless buffet. Some of the popular blooms that brighten up the landscape are also coming to fine form. The myrtle are peaking across the crest of the mountain, and the famous displays of Catawba Rhododendron are in full bloom at elevations similar to Inspiration Point. The purple wave will work its way up Alum Cave Trail over the next couple weeks before the white variety of Rosebay Rhododendron gradually follows behind this summer. Stay dry and safe travels. After some passing showers during the night, the clouds have settled in nice and thick atop the summit. It’s unlikely we’ll see much in the way of views or sunshine today, especially as thunderstorms are set to escalate this afternoon. Tomorrow will be similar in terms of temps (50s), rain chances, and windy conditions. Layer up for staying dry on the hike up or down this week.
Our reservations office will be closed today in observance of the federal holiday and will resume normal business hours Tuesday. We hope everyone has a meaningful Memorial Day, taking time to reflect on the sacrifices of the fallen who gave their lives in service of our country. Whether that involves attending local community events, family gatherings, or seeking solitude in a national park, these heroes have given us much to be thankful for. Tis another glorious morning,
We’ve been spoiled of late by superb skies and stunning solar spectacles. Our multi-day streak of vivid sunrises and soothing sunsets have been the perfect bookends to a day on this mightiest of mountains. And no two have been the same, nor does admiring their beauty ever grow tiresome. The calling of distant horizons, the unending folds of countless ridges, the luring of colors not thought to be possible on the light spectrum…all making it easy to get lost in wonder and the slow passing of time. Just one of numerous perks while enjoying a retreat at Tennessee’s most famous lodge! Now that temps have risen from the chilly cellar of recent days, and the sunshine has held control of the heavens, the opportunities for exploring the wilderness are optimal. Combine that with it being the front end of a holiday weekend and you have the makings for a busy mountain top. Yesterday was no exception, as ambitious hikers, sunbath seekers, and “I Hiked It” shirt hunters seized the day and conquered the summit. Visitors should get to enjoy fairly decent conditions for the better part of this Sunday before clouds thicken and rain chances resume as early as this afternoon. The trend leading into the start of the new week shows wet and stormy conditions. It certainly appears that the month of May intends on concluding much like it began, so we’ll be sure to savor these beautiful sunny moments while we have them! Good Afternoon,
How delightful it is to be looking up at blue sky and not have to wonder about any rain for a change. Sunshine is beaming far and wide across the mountains today, with only patchy clouds zipping overhead. While the sun feels perfect against the skin, the wind is a constant presence today, keeping our mild temps feeling rather cool at our elevation. In fact, we are expected to see our thermometer dip from low 50s midday to upper 30s overnight. And with gusts of 45mph in the mix, our windchills will have conditions feeling below freezing when cabin occupants open their doors while it’s dark. Friday is looking though it will be a repeat performance of mostly clear skies and chilly air. Saturday will start the holiday weekend off decently but then the clouds should return and along with it a gradual increase in rain possibilities. So if you’re in town and want to hit the mountain with the best chance of staying dry, you’d be wise to tackle the trails tomorrow or first thing Saturday. Otherwise, just come prepared for what could involve wet hiking the few days after. Enjoy the rest of your day. A warm day in the mountains is ahead. While thick clouds hound the higher peaks, rain shower remnants dot the region and morning sunshine battles for a way in. Skies are going to be a mixed bag much of the day, with the strongest storms expected late tonight and into early Wednesday. That should make for mostly decent hiking weather today. It’s going to be on the warmer side for us, as temps will scrape the upper 60s this afternoon. Everyone should soak it up, because after today a little late-May cool down is coming.
As the greenery of the landscape thickens, vivid colors are also adding their splash at varying elevations now. While the myrtle at its namesake point should reach peak bloom this week, the catawba rhododendron have begun to appear at places like Inspiration Point. All signs that summer time in the Smokies isn’t that far off! After what was likely our sunniest complete weekend of the season thus far, we’re back to witnessing cloudy skies, obstructed views, and precip possibilities. While hikers should get to at least enjoy dry conditions this morning, storms are expected to flare up this afternoon. Anyone getting a late start up the trail today will definitely want a jacket or umbrella handy before arriving to Lodge. Tuesday is calling for more rain as well, but perhaps we’ll be rewarded with some rainbows in between the various stormy episodes. Anyone with an adventure to Mt. LeConte planned for later this week should take note of the decreasing temperatures forecasted. Thursday is showing a cool down that could see our thermometer here at 6,400’ read in the upper 30s. Folks will be thrown a curveball for spending time outside this coming holiday weekend by needing to layer up!
Have a great rest of the day. Wishing you all a splendid and sunny Sunday!
Yesterday was the first true taste of a warm and bright spring day that we’ve gotten to enjoy in quite a while. After what has been a wet and dreary month of May so far was finally turned upside down with clear blue skies and abundant sunshine on Saturday. And travelers from far and wide took note, flocking to the mountain and frolicking through the forest. And with temps holding steady between the 50s and 60s, it’s just a tad easier to roll out of bed and answer the call of the outdoors. If you happened to miss out on getting to explore the park yesterday, do not fret, because today is shaping up to be just as pleasant. There is but a slight possibility of a passing rain shower late today, but nothing that should dampen anyone’s spirits or ruin plans for enjoying the majesty of the mountain. Still plenty of sunshine, comfy temps, and inspiring views to go around today. It looks like wet weather will return on Monday, so we’ll all be back to toting the rain gear once again. With more daylight, warmer climates, and greener landscapes, all signs are pointing to summer’s inevitable arrival. And with it, means more mammalian activity in the country’s most visited national park. That’s right, both humans and the area’s native wildlife will all be out and about in greater numbers very soon, which means an increase in engagement. It’s important for the human visitors to remember that this park serves as these animals’ home, and to refrain from negatively impacting their natural behaviors and way of life. One very obvious and simple way to successfully do so is to not feed the wildlife, big or small. Doing so only encourages bad habits, puts the animal’s health and livelihood at risk, and can create dangerous situations for future visitors. So keep a safe distance, take accountability for your actions and personal belongings, and understand that your time spent here in the Smokies - albeit brief - can have long lasting impacts on this beloved place’s numerous natural resources. Have a great weekend. Welcome back warmth, and hello humidity!
Without fail, mid May serves as an abrupt transition point from feeling like winter is finally giving up the fight to summer kicking down the door unapologetically. So much for spring, one might say! If you’ve hiked the mountain as often as we have, then this morning’s noticeable change in the air would hit your chest like a stack of bricks. Warmer temps and a sticky atmosphere mean June is right around the corner. That equates to sweatier hikes, so keep that in mind when it comes to packing adequate rations of hydration and nourishment for the trail. These kind of conditions are going to sap your energy and reserves much faster than when it’s cooler and drier. Temps this afternoon at the summit are going to reach the upper 60s easily today and tomorrow. Overnight lows will feel quite comfortable, only sagging into the mid 50s. Clouds are dominating the skylines this morning with some isolated rain showers in the vicinity. The weather is supposed to improve this afternoon though, and we might even get some glimpses of sunshine. Saturday is shaping up to be a rinse and repeat, with substantial storm possibilities during the morning hours then clearer skies the back half of the day. Have those protective layers in tow should you decide to start your trek up the mountain early. Enjoy the day. It’s a not-so-misty morning for a change!
Our wet rut that has dominated the first half of May seems to have finally broken. Yesterday saw thick clouds lift and fall all around the mountain, but the slim rain chances never really materialized. And today, the opportunity for sunshine far outweighs any precip possibilities. In fact, the forecast is turning more favorable now and through the weekend, appearing more summer-like between the warmer temps, pleasant mornings, and only afternoon pop-up thunderstorms. So continue to throw that rain coat in your pack before heading out the door, but enjoy that you stand a greater chance of enjoying drier trails and soaking up stunning views these next few days. Speaking of a warming trend, we could see high temps near 70° today and tomorrow, with overnight lows only slipping into the 50s. That will feel mighty pleasant at our elevation rain or shine. After so much rain, expect the landscape to absolutely burst with color and vivid vegetation. Enjoy the outdoors if you’re in the area! |
