Hello!
It looks like we’re going to have a fantastic Friday on Mt LeConte! The weather is cold and clear. 23 degrees and no rain or snow last night. It should be another good day for solar panels and winter caretakers to sit outside and bask in the bright sunshine! I hiked up to Cliff Tops yesterday afternoon to view the sunset. The sunset lived up to my expectations, but the amazing thing was the clouds. I was fortunate enough to be able to gaze down on an inversion—a sea of clouds below me and clear blue skies overhead. The peaks of the mountains emerged from the clouds like islands. The mountains are calling me and I must go! Wishing y’all a blessed day. HAPPY TRAILS!! WILDCAT/Bert

HELLO, EVERYONE!
We started the day cold and clear. The morning temperature was 31 degrees—12 degrees colder than the previous three days! The Lodge received 6/10ths of an inch of precipitation yesterday. And the skies are clear—I could see the moon and stars when I left my cabin. My solar panel is ecstatic—this is the first time in about a week that we’ve seen sunshine! This should be a great day for recharging batteries. I think that I’ll hike out to Myrtle Point and enjoy the sunshine. I hope that y’all will have a chance to enjoy this nice weather! HAPPY TRAILS!! WILDCAT/Bert Hello from the top of Mt LeConte!
Today’s report is almost identical to that of the past two days. That tends to make writing this blog sort of boring. But that may be getting ready to change—the National Weather Service is predicting a 90 percent chance of rain starting this afternoon. The most exciting thing that happened to me yesterday was meeting the three young men who stayed at the backcountry shelter last night. One was from Belgium, one was from Indonesia, and one was from Russia. I thought that was an unusual combination of nationalities! And to meet the three in one shelter on the same night made it even more unique. One of the things that I enjoy the most about this job is the opportunity to meet men and women of all ages from all over the world. Christmas is coming! HAPPY TRAILS!! WILDCAT/Bert HELLO!
Today is starting out almost identical to yesterday. 43 degrees temperature, 1/4th inch precipitation, and lots of fog. Highway 441 is open and snow and ice have melted off the trails. The Mt LeConte Lodge is accessible, but we can’t promise awesome views from the top unless the weather conditions change drastically this afternoon Perhaps this would be a good day to get your Christmas shopping done. I hope that y’all have a great day! HAPPY TRAILS!! WILDCAT/Bert Good Morning!
We have noticeably warmer temperatures at the Lodge this morning! 42 degrees and 0.20 inches of rain yesterday, resulting in lots of fog and no snow! Highway 441 to Newfound Gap is open. Pictures of dense fog seem to have a tendency to be less exciting than pictures of beautiful sunsets. I’m just trying to tell it like it is! Take good care of your selves, HAPPY TRAILS!! WILDCAT/Bert Howdy!
Thirty-four degrees and windy up here on top of the mountain. The Lodge received 3/10th of an inch of precipitation yesterday and the remaining snow is turning into slush. Highway 441 is closed. I’m enjoying fresh hot black coffee and listening to Classic Blue Grass Gospel music on the radio this morning. This seems like a great day to appreciate hot clam chowder! Stay warm and be safe! HAPPY TRAILS!! WILDCAT/Bert Good Morning, Everyone!
It looks like another pleasant day on Mt LeConte. The current temperature is 33 degrees and Highway 441 is open at the present time although it may be closed later today because of a high wind advisory. The high temperature yesterday was 38 degrees and the low temperature was 23 degrees. There is still approximately three inches of snow on the ground and the trails are snow packed and icy—be careful (traction devices highly recommended!) I was visited yesterday by two of my friends who were winter caretakers in 1973 and 1974. One of them made custard for us. Very tasty! Be safe and have a great day! HAPPY TRAILS!! WILDCAT/Bert GOOD MORNING!!
I’m enjoying a nice warm morning on the mountain today—26 degrees—that’s 20 degrees warmer than yesterday at the same time! The snow is melting, so what was slush a day or two ago is now ICE. That translates to “BRING YOUR TRACTION DEVICES!” Yesterday the temperature got up to 29 degrees, and the skies were clear enough to allow me to observe a beautiful sunset! I noticed this morning as I changed the sign outside the dining hall that today is Friday the 13th! Good Luck! HAPPY TRAILS!! WILDCAT/Bert Hello Everyone!
It’s white again on Mt LeConte! The Lodge received about three inches of dry powder snow yesterday. Our morning temperature was a frosty 6 degrees and the skies are clear and the sun is shining brightly! Highway 441 to Newfound Gap is still closed due to icy road conditions. There were very few day hikers yesterday due road conditions and the snow that continued to fall until about 4:00 PM. Due to the weather conditions I was unable to view a sunset from Cliff Tops. Please stay warm and be safe today! HAPPY TRAILS!! WILDCAT/Bert HOWDY!!
The Lodge actually experienced a couple of hours yesterday with occasional sunshine! I decided to take advantage of this unexpected and infrequent opportunity and take a few pictures for you to see the lodge in sunlight instead of fog. Please notice the sign! This means that the lodge, more specifically the gift shop, is CLOSED. The National Park Service does not permit us to sell you souvenirs or sack lunches during the winter months, only in-season from March to November. This practice is not new, and such info is viewable on our websites when doing your responsible pre-hike research. If you need water, I will be more than happy to show you the natural flowing spring. That’s one aspect of what “off the grid” means—obtaining our water from the earth—not a plastic container from a vending machine! And if you do decide to purchase bottled water down in the “front county”, please, please, please DO NOT discard your containers at the lodge or anywhere else in the wilderness! If you “Pack It In—Pack It Out!” The Lodge is not a recycling center for the National Park! Thank you in advance for your cooperation. The gate on Highway 441 up to Newfound Gap was closed at 7 AM in anticipation of snow that is forecast for later this morning. Hopefully the road will be reopened later today. The current temperature at the lodge is 32 degrees. The high temperature yesterday was 45 degrees and the low was 32 degrees. The Lodge received .40 inches of rain yesterday. Any prior snow has all melted on top of Mt LeConte. Be sure to bring proper rain gear if you get out today. Stay safe and dry today. HAPPY TRAILS!! WILDCAT/ Bert |
