Cool Snow Pic

1/21/2011

Hi everyone, it is Allyson again. Alex has hiked down for a quick trip into town. You may wonder who watches the place while he is gone. We have a few experienced people who help the caretaker out when he needs a day off here and there. Tim Webb is one of these "relief" caretakers. He was up there last weekend and had this photo taken in front of one of the cabins. I thought it was a great example of the amount of snow that is on the mountain. Last I heard, it was around 9 degrees this morning. I am not sure of the amount of new snow that accumulated. It is sunny in town, but there seems to be a big cloud hanging over the mountain. That could mean they are still getting snowed on. I will try and keep you posted.

Allyson, yes, please keep us posted on the weather if you hear anything. Five of us are planning to day hike up tomorrow (although NG rd is currently closed). Thank you SO much!

Jerry, which route are you taking (Alum?) and when are you starting? Maybe we'll run into each other.

Melissa, Alum if NG Rd is open. Leaving early ,7ish I think. Looking forward to the hike.

Allyson, looking at this picture with so much snow built up, does the weight of it cause any roof or structual damages to the cabins?

Nancy, we have not had any problems with the weight of the snow. I think it might take a little more then that to cause problems.
As for trail conditions, I did hear that the mountain got 2 more inches on top of 16". Alum cave trail has been broken. I would take it slow. I will not have information by the time some of you are leaving in the morning. I hope this helps.

Jerry, we are going up Alum, too...but won't start till about 8:30 or 9 (we have a three hour drive). NF Gap rd was closed this morning, but they've reopened it as of now. Hope to run into you! Be safe!

Thanks, Allyson!) I check updates from my phone on the way up, until I run out of signal! :)

I've never been on LeConte. I was wondering how many cabins there are. It sounds like there must be quite a few to accommodate visitors and crew. I'm really enjoying the snow pics!

Manuel: The good news about hiking from NG to CB is along the way there are no places for you to fall. AT CB, however, the place with the awesome views, there is no shortage of sheer drops. The trip back is downhill on the rocks. Covered with snow or ice would be treacherous. Make sure you calculate a turnaround time, and that someone knows when to expect you back. I'd save this hike for better conditions where you can sit out at CB and chillax for an hour or so,

Sandra: There are 10 guest cabins, seven are one room and can accommodate up to four guests. There are two three-room cabins and one two-room cabin. There are about 1/2 dozen rooms for crew. None of the cabins have bathrooms.
