I Do Love Those Fluffy Clouds

5/10/2013

Apparently I was doing the wrong "sun dance". After correcting my mistake, this is what I saw.
Picture
The white fluffy clouds hanging in that beautiful blue sky is exactly what my soul needed. Chris took a jaunt out to West Point and captured this picture of Cliff Tops. The crew were throwing on their shorts and tank tops to get maximum exposure of vitamin D. Lord knows I need to, my doctors wonders why I have an extremely low level of vitamin D.  One thing we have learned up here, take it when you can get it. I can now apologize for my whining. That happens when my seasonal affective disorder kicks in. The high yesterday reached 54º with a low of 42º. The llamas should have a beautiful day for traveling today. The sun came out this morning and put on a beautiful show. All is right on Mt. LeConte

I spent a few months on LeConte in 1977. I had a dream about being in the kitchen last night and it brought back great memories. I hope to get back up in the fall. Say hello to Tim if you see him. A friend from Syracuse.

Good morning to you Ryan,we are visiting family in western New Jersey this weekend, so I will check out a local trail on a smaller mtn here. Being in the woods on any mountain is good, but will miss being on LeConte this week! Have a good one all!

Steve , are you hiking in high point or stokes forest? They have great trails

Beautiful photo. How do you get out to West Point for that shot? I know Bull Head leads down that way, is there a side trail up to this point? My brother and I are staying at the shelter in about 10 days planning on doing the Rainbow Falls-Bull Head loop and was wondering if this is an attainable view or only for the skilled bushwacker.

Paul B, I was wondering the same thing.

As you walk down Alum Cave, while it is still mostly flat near the top just above Corner Ledge (cable and great photo op above the point where Alum Cave passes below Cliff Tops) there is a hint of a trail that falls off to the right. Follow that ridgeline to West Point. Eventually, as you look over your left shoulder, today's image appears. Might want to wear jeans. It's not quite a shredder, but it's not the Boulevard either!

I was very glad to read the comments regarding children on the trail and that many were of the same thought(s); On future hikes, wherever they may be, it will be the first thing I do or mention if I encounter young children, or anyone who appears to be struggling or poorly prepared. I believe that I owe it to them. Debi: that's an excellent idea: let the younger ones carry the water and that surely will impede their hiking speed ! I haven't had the privelege or opportunity to work at the lodge as a crew member, yet, so I cannot honestly say that I wouldn't get bored up there on rainy days, etc. I'd love to find out, though ! It IS the place to be, for me, in any sort of weather. I chuckled a bit with the comment about guests becoming unruly if inebriated after dinner, etc. On my first viist I drank far too many glasses of wine and had to be helped to my cabin. I think I could have made it alone, but two crew members thought better and I thanked them for their assistance. Hope everyone has a great weekend. G'day.

LOL! I thought of you when I read the drinking and unruly ( I know you were not unruly) comment the other day, but I was trying to be on my best behavior and bit my lip. Looks like another weekend working around the house for us. Maybe we'll get a sunny Saturday next weekend so we can visit the mountain. Good day my friend.

Anyone have any advice for making the trip with young children? We've done backpacking trips but not since our four kids were born, all 6 and under. We are hiking the at to icewater springs the first night, then the rest of the boulevard trail route a second day to the LeConte shelter, then down alum cave trail.

Bring a lot of snacks and go slow. Start early and take a lot of breaks. 4 under 6, you will have your hands full. But try to make a game out of it. Tshirts at the top, candy bars at the time. Bribe if you have too. But could make a lot of happy memories. Get them enthused about it. Make fancy hiking sticks and talk and read books about it. Good luck and have fun!! I would also dress them in a bright color shirt so there easy to keep track of. That's what I did with my kiddies when they were little when we went to amusement park. Even though they won't be too far out of reach its just good to catch your eye real fast. Red, orange, yellow.

Oh and we already discussed bright clothing! We will be carrying in packs at least one, usually two and sometimes three of them, but we are still aware of the danger of a wanderer. And since I was blessed with all girls, they will be sporting a whole bunch of pink!

Thanks Donna! Candy bars are a great idea! Are there any danger issues we should be aware of? Have read many trail descriptions but I've learned in the past, they don't compare to the real experience of God's wilderness! Lol.

Funny, Doug, about having to be helped to your cabin. Brought back memories of my first overnighter up there..........I drank many glasses of wine at dinner, and a crew member came to refill my glass again, and I said, no, I have had enough. I still recall to this day his response: "you ain't drivin' anywhere tonight, are you?" I meekly said no, and so I got another refill.

Thanks, Rexanna. It is a good story, and a true one. One of my good memories from the Lodge.
Of course, the only problem with drinking so much wine is the effects; around midnight I went out to go to the restroom, and when coming out in the wind, snow, and sleet, I got disoriented and headed in the general direction of downhill. Fortunately after a few yards, I figured out I was going in the wrong direction and righted myself.
So many great memories at the Lodge..............wouldn't trade them for anything.
