​What way will windswept clouds blow? How shall scattered storms track hither and fro?  Simply roll the dice, then perhaps you’ll know!

Anyone who ventured into the woods early this morning sacrificed views but swapped them for an opportunity to stay dry.  For a little while at least.  About lunchtime the skies started getting more “active.” Word from the trails are that brief rain showers have been tap dancing across the mountains.  One moment there’s dark clouds and a downpour, then quickly calm and sunshine the next.   So all those points previously made about packing for everything are only getting reinforced today.  The Lodge has spent more time in the clouds than above or below them, and temps up top are having a battle to eclipse the 60° mark.  Still, it feels quite comfortable at our elevation if you aren’t dripping from the most recent rain or your own sweat after completing a sticky ascent.

Our area is in the midst of a Flood Watch that is slated to expire sometime late tomorrow morning.  Isolated storms - and there have been several rumbles already - will continue to sweep across East TN and the Smokies now and through Sunday.  Tread carefully along slick surfaces like smooth or slanted rocks on trail, and don’t be surprised if a random cloud burst causes a drainage or two to suddenly swell with water.  This time of year, creeks can rise and fall with haste, but it’s still wise to exercise caution, especially if a crossing lacks the convenience of a footbridge.
