​The heat is on!  As unusual as it may be, we are in the midst of a multi-day Heat Advisory from now until Thursday night.  The lowest elevations will be forced to endure the brunt of it, likely to witness triple digit heat indexes.  At the Lodge, we’re anticipating a run of afternoon highs in the 70s while overnight lows might not dip below 60°.  While the specifics for our elevation might sound downright delightful, it’s still not the norm.  And since we don’t have the luxury of AC or swimming pools, we rely on the helpful breezes for relief and circulation.  When there isn’t one, even at 6,593’ it can feel unavoidably hot and sticky.  There are occasional storm chances during the advisory, in which rain showers can do their part to cool the air.  The key for everyone though is to rely on personal preparation…namely adequate hydration and nourishment before and during your outdoor activity.  Start early in the morning when temps are at their coolest, and enjoy frequent breaks during the climb.

Visitors to Mt. LeConte these next couple weeks will notice increased trail maintenance taking place.  NPS crews are conducting some routine work on our numerous footpaths.  Water bars, drainage trenches, rock chiseling, step building, brush cutting…you name it, they are on it.  If you come across a team performing this noble work, be sure and give them a hearty thank you.  Especially for doing such backbreaking tasks in these hot and humid conditions.  This activity will be taking place Monday through Thursday from now til mid July.
