LeConte Lodge Recreation Building Construction Update!

We are incredibly excited to share some wonderful news from the top of the mountain!

The National Park Service and their contractors are officially beginning a major improvement project at LeConte Lodge: the removal of our old recreation building to make way for a brand-new Recreation Building, set to open for the 2027 season!

This beautiful upgrade will give our community of hikers a refreshed, welcoming space to relax, connect, and swap stories after a rewarding day on the trails, ensuring the magic of the LeConte experience continues for generations to come.

Delivering Progress: Upcoming Helicopter Airlift

Building at 6,400 feet takes a little mountaintop magic—and some serious logistics. To safely transport materials for this transformation, a helicopter airlift is scheduled for Tuesday, July 14, between 9:00 AM and 12:00 PM. There will be additional airlifts later in the year, please check back for future updates.

To comply with FAA safety regulations and ensure a smooth, quick turnaround, we will need to temporarily adjust a few operations on that morning:

•Lodge Grounds Closure: The immediate Lodge grounds will be closed to visitors from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM.
•Temporary Amenity Pause: Restrooms and water spigots located within the Lodge perimeter will not be available during this 3-hour window.
•Rapid Reopening: Normal Lodge operations and services will resume immediately as soon as the airlift wraps up at noon!

Your Day on the Summit Will Still Be Fantastic!

We want to stress that the mountaintop experience remains just as great as ever. The airlift won’t stop you from enjoying a beautiful day in the Smokies! During the brief morning flight window, you will still have full access to:

•Trails & Overlooks: All five approach trails and the spectacular scenic overlooks atop Mount LeConte remain wide open.  Flaggers will be positioned along the trails around the Lodge directing hiker traffic, which may require brief wait times.
•Restrooms: The composting privy at the nearby backcountry shelter is fully accessible.
•Drinking Water: Fresh water is available at the nearby spring along the Trillium Gap Trail (as a standard backcountry reminder, treating or boiling spring water is recommended).
