LeConte Lodge Recreation Building Construction Update!

​Progress is Happening Fast!

We have an exciting update to share regarding the demolition phase of the Recreation Building at LeConte Lodge!

The National Park Service and their contractor have made significant progress in deconstructing the outgoing Recreation Building.  They are preparing to conduct another airlift to remove the demolished materials from the mountain top.  The NPS has approved a helicopter airlift to take place during the week of August 10 - 14.  Airlifting of materials will occur from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM those days, in the event there are no weather related delays.

Visitor Procedures During An Airlift

To comply with FAA safety regulations and ensure a smooth, quick turnaround, LeConte Lodge will need to temporarily adjust a few operations each morning that flying occurs:

•Lodge Grounds Closure: The immediate Lodge grounds will be closed to all visitors from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM.
•Temporary Amenity Pause: Restrooms and water spigots located within the Lodge perimeter will not be available during this 3-hour window.
•Rapid Reopening: Normal Lodge operations and services will resume immediately as soon as the airlift wraps up each day at noon!
•Overnight Guests: Breakfast before departure will be served slightly earlier each morning at 7:30 AM to ensure prompt check-out by 9:00 AM.  Guests staying multiple nights will be given safety instruction by Lodge staff upon arrival.

Your Day on the Summit Will Still Be Fantastic!

We want to stress that the mountaintop experience remains just as great as ever. The airlift won’t stop you from enjoying a beautiful day in the Smokies! During the brief morning flight window, you will still have full access to:

•Trails & Overlooks: All five approach trails and the spectacular scenic overlooks atop Mount LeConte remain wide open.  Flaggers will be positioned along the trails around the Lodge directing hiker traffic, which may require brief wait times.
•Restrooms: The composting privy at the nearby backcountry shelter is fully accessible.
•Drinking Water: Fresh water is available at the nearby spring along the Trillium Gap Trail (as a standard backcountry reminder, treating or boiling spring water is recommended).
