Gódan daginn,

low 20, high 33.
Starting to snow. got about 5 inches now.
we are in a winter weather advisory until tuesday morning.
The park service has been turning people around,
and just about every road you can imagine is closed.
If I can get off the mountain this morning, i'm going down for a few days.
See you soon, and stay warm.
sink unfrozen :).

Do you go down Alum trail? And if the roads are closed and the park is turning people around are you allowed to drive into G-burg or do you hike or do you have skis? At any rate, have a safe trip down and back and enjoy the time at the bottom.
Look forward to any pics you take while on your break. Some of the town would be nice.

Can't imagine why you would want to leave, but at any rate, have a safe trek and stay warm.

Is that a fire hydrant in the front of that picture? If so, how on Earth does it work up there?

Scott, you are correct. That is a fire hydrant. The water presser coming from the water tanks above camp and being gravity fed to the hydrant produces enough presser.

What an amazing winter wonderland. I can only imagine the epicness that is being surrounded by snow in isolation at 6500 ft. Beautiful.

I don't understand why you would leave for a few days--- Guess there is a big difference in living it and thinking someone like (me) wanting to !! Be safe !!!
Let someone dependable know your hiking plans-just in case you need help!

Anybody have any first hand knowledge of the park conditions. I'm on my way up Tuesday and will stay until Friday. With any luck I'll get a picture of andrew for you guys in his natural habitat.

From everything I've read and seen on the news they are in the midst of a Winter Storm watch down there. Guessing right now most of the roads might be closed into the park. Suggest you go to Smoky Mountains website and I think they give weather conditions and road closing.

If you go, enjoy and have safe trip.

Dan, here is the website www.nps.gov/grsm/index.htm. They also have phone 865 436-1200. Dial 631 for road and 630 for weather conditions. Looks like they have some roads closed now..main one being 441 between G-burg and Cherokee. Hope this helps.

Thanks Marilyn, I'm planning on driving around the east end of the park from Cherokee to Gatlinburg where my hotel is. That is if 441 is closed when I get there Tues afternoon.
