Nature's Alarm Clock

It was impossible to sleep late this morning. The sound of hail impaling my roof woke me up at 5:30. The hail storm was accompanied by a crazy lightening show. Chris said it was like trying to make the biscuits in a disco tech. The temperature last night was 35. It rained most of the day yesterday and stayed on the cool side. The high was 46.

I keep reading facebook posts from my friends talking about the flowers that are in full bloom in the valley. Spring has hit the mountain so much sooner than normal. The deer are out and about. Chris found ramps on top of the mountain. They usually do not  come in until late April. It makes me wonder how early our wild flowers will bloom around the lodge. I am thinking we may see a full display of color toward the end of June.

This brings up questions about trail safety in storms. What is the best course of action should someone get caught halfway, (or anywhere) out on the trail and a Southern thunderstorm kick up? Being almost 7,000 feet up you are truely in the heart of the storm. How are the cabins protected from lightning strikes?

We will be coming up the last week in June. Glad to hear that things should be blooming at that time. Last year we came up in May and it snowed (only for about 1/2 hour) right before supper. What an adventure! Looking forward to June and the wonderful peace and quiet that comes with the mountain.

Oh Allyson! I must say I'm absolutely hooked on your blog!! We're back home now in New Albany, Indiana... missing the mountains as we always do... we dream about moving down there often.

I took my first hike ever yesterday, all the way up to the Leconte Lodge. (I'm only 5 and I didn't rest until I got to the top of the mountain!!!) I thought the hail was a bear knocking on my window, but was so happy that it wasn't!!! The snow I put in my pocket melted by the time the pancakes were in my belly. The park ranger made me a Junior Ranger...I can't wait to come back!!!
