Our streak of endless sun-filled days and star-studded nights appears to be coming to a close. My, what an appreciated stretch of superb days it has been to begin the autumn season. Although it’s feeling much warmer down below today, at our elevation the temps are quite divine. Clouds have made their presence known today, adding a dose of humidity back into the mix while obscuring views from the summit at times. There is a slight chance for rain showers as we trudge toward evening, but this weekend is really where the skies are expected to pack their punch. Tomorrow and Sunday are both calling for heavy rain and thunder, so trails that have been bone dry and trickling creeks this past week will most certainly become soaked slogs and bubbling brooks.
With less daylight and cooler average temps, these aren’t the conditions to engage unprepared, especially for day hikers who don’t have an assigned cabin waiting for them to overnight in. We’re heading into the time of year where hypothermia can pose increasing risks to those improperly clad for staying dry and warm in the outdoors. Please be smart, do the research, pack the appropriate gear, and know one’s limits. The middle of the backcountry where resources are extremely limited is not the place to naively learn hard lessons. The mountain isn’t going anywhere. Our reservations team has been hard at work flipping through those online written requests and answering phones, fulfilling those 2027 bookings. Once the process takes a pause at 5:00 PM today, it won’t resume again until Monday at 8:00 AM in conjunction with our normal business hours. Thank you to everyone who submitted requests to stay at our world-famous lodge next season. It’s always a heart-warming treat to read the countless comments that folks include with their requests. From eager first timers to grateful repeat regulars, to those celebrating highly anticipated milestones, as well as the kind words describing our staff and the experience they caringly foster.
