Morning,

Winter is back! Yesterday morning was truly miserable. It was 33 and raining with high winds until about 10, then the temperature dropped enough for the precipitation to turn into SNOW! The high was 33. The low was 14 and it was 14 and clear at observation. There are about 4.5" up top. The trails are sure to be treacherous and icy, so be careful.

I stayed inside yesterday morning to avoid the hypothermia conditions. Once it turned to snow, I hiked down Alum Cave and met a few friends who will be watching the mountain for me for a few days. I hiked back up with them and we settled in for the evening. I'll be on a short backpacking trip for the next two nights, so the blog won't be updated until the afternoon of the 30th. Safe hiking!

Ahh, snow! Makes me want to get out the yaxtrax and start trekking! Nothing but sloppy mud on the trails here in southern Ohio. Enjoy your trip. You know we will want photos and a full report of course.

I don't think god has ever been mentioned in this. It's just life plain and simple.

Thanks for sharing. Always enjoy the updates! I volunteer for the Park and would LOVE to be up there right now! Sounds like you burn the trails quite often!

The woods are lovely, dark, and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

Oh the snow!!!! I told u it would return. Have fun hiking. They are beautiful pics. So weird Tennessee has snow and Michigan does not. It looks really nice in the pictures.

TN does not have snow, only the tallest of the mountains have the snow because of their elevation. The climate of Mount Leconte is more comparable to some areas in southern Canada than actual TN. However, the mountain will actually get more snow than most of Canada, do to the elevation, and the effect it has on storms.

Awesome pics with the snow. We had about 2 inches in central Indiana yesterday but its all but melted now. Envy you on my favorite place in the world. Haven't been to all the world...just parts..but it would still be my favorite. Looking forward to hearing about your backpacking experience and what you saw. Keep up the great pics and blog. Happy New Year!

I particularly enjoyed the view looking across the lodge grounds down into the valley below; I won't be able to make it up there this winter but a year from now I should be a frequent visitor; Knee surgery in the spring, but that'll only slow me down for three or four weeks; hope to get some cancellations for Sept thru Oct, but I do have Nov 18-20 and hope to bring a friend; Have a good New Year JP; what a great location at which to bring in the new year !!

Hey, Doug Y. Maybe we will be on Leconte at the same time. My husband, my brother and I are on the waiting list for the second week in Sept. I'm having some knee problems too, thankfully not requiring surgery, but saw an ortho doc today & I certainly plan on being in shape if we get a cancellation for that week. I've never been on Leconte & I can't wait!
