Shortly after sunrise, the clouds formed overhead and dropped, concealing the summit behind thick grey. Everyone was hoping that skies would have cooperated for one more satisfactory morning of flying, but it just wasn’t in the deck of cards today. In fact, since the forecast for the rest of the week looks less than ideal for conducting flight operations, the ongoing airlift has been put on hold. For the next few days, Lodge grounds will be open the public and the gift shop will provide souvenir and snack services from 9:00-10:00 AM once again. For overnight guests, that means breakfast will be at 8:00 AM with cabin checkout reverting back to 9:30 AM. How long this airlift delay will last is still being determined by the NPS’ demo contractor. As soon as we learn more details, we will communicate them speedily.
Today marks the last full day of summer in 2026, and it feels every bit like the season is going out sizzling. Hot temps are anticipated across all elevations, with high humidity and dappled sunshine helping to magnify the toasty intensity. Autumn, though, will kickoff true to character. Beginning Tuesday, daytime high temps are going to drop considerably, more and more over the coming days. In the valley, we’re looking at a dip from low 90s to mid 70s, while atop the mountain our nights will slide into the 40s. The change will coincide with substantial rain and storm chances daily. Sprinkle in some already wilting leaves, and you have the sights and feels of fall right out of the gate. If slated to visit the summit this week, best layer up for staying dry and warm.
