This afternoon marks the official handover of the seasonal baton from summer to autumn, and wow is the former going out with a bang. Intense storms producing heavy rain and chaotic lightning have been hammering the region for the last several hours. While the area has been desperate for some much needed precip - with plenty of this morning’s deluge already soaking in - there are still going to be places working harder to manage the sudden inundation of water. Be mindful, whether driving inside or outside of the park, and while on trail, for rising creeks and covered roadways. Please report any downed trees or damaged trail tread to the NPS promptly as well.
As mentioned yesterday, we are on the front end of a cool down this week. Temps up top might not climb higher than the 50s the next few days, and brisk evenings in the 40s are on the way. Storms and rain are expected every day, so pack and plan accordingly. Anyone interested in submitting online written requests for overnight stays in 2027 has until this Thursday, September 24th at 4:00 PM Eastern to do so.
