what's broken can always be fixed, what's fixed will always be broken.

The forces of mountains are sublime and far-reaching; the ability to ride on the clouds is permeated by the mountains; and the ability to follow the wind is inevitably liberated by the mountains. Dogen
Morning y'all,

It's another gorgeous, relatively clear day up top. The high yesterday reached 46 degrees. The low was a warm 35 degrees. It was 38 degrees and clear at 7am observation. The mountain received no new precipitation. There is still some patchy snow left on the ground up top. I went down Rainbow and up Alum yesterday and the ice is getting a little better. I'd bet that with today's warm temperatures there will be almost no need for any sort of traction devices by this weekend. There was still one sheet on Alum that spelled certain discomfort for anyone in sneakers, but other than that both trails are easily passable.

Top photo & above: Great sky.
I've spent the better part of the last few days out enjoying the weather, moving moving moving. It felt like a relief to get back up to the lodge yesterday afternoon. I pulled out my favorite sleeping pad and tried to 'cultivate stillness', as my friend Adam would say. I went out to the mountain man cineplex to watch the evening sky show. The clouds were shading a bit, then lightened towards pink as the sun went down. The mountain air entered my lungs in big gulps of crispness and the wind was light. When you're out hiking all day, a little rest feels like a lot. When you do more, you need less. It's a graceful economy. All I needed was that sleeping pad, those clouds and the soft patch of earth beneath my head.

Well said. And so very true. I've been up there during the winter, and it truly is a magical and beautiful location. I've spent the night in the shelter, and I believe that staying up there for days and days, as you do in your caretaker position, would reinvigorate me quite thoroughly indeed ! Wanda: I know how you feel about commenting every day. I try to limit the length of my posts, but at times I exceed my own limits. It's one reason I created my own website, still unfinished in development, so I can write at length. For the moment I have a different sort of "mountain" to climb, and that's learning a completely new operating system on my new laptop, installing a good word processor just a few minutes. Great Galloping Gertie !!! I am almost a totally illiterate when it comes to computer technology, but I'm gaining on it ! The first website I went to with this new machine was this very one ! So, soon I may even become a "Master" at this (hmmmmm.....) and also learn to use a new camera, a small compact that keeps me from having to lug my big D70 along on my hikes. Yeah, I'm content and surrounded by "toys" ! Well, after all, isn't it the person with the most toys when they die who wins !?? "N'importe ou vous allez, vous etes la. G'day

JP, great pictures today. Must admit the pictures and your descriptions make me guilty of at least 2 of the 7 deadly sins....envy that you're enjoying the mountain and lust since I'm stuck in Indiana when I'd rather be atop that magical place. You're so lucky to be doing what many of us would like to be doing. Enjoy the stillness.

Beautiful JP! We're in the car headed back to New Albany. Again, it was a true pleasure meeting up with in person on Alum! Hopefully we'll see you in March before you leave. Merry Christmas and a very happy new year.

This Michigan girl may complain about winter a lot. But I love to put on my Yaxtrax and go for a walk, feed the birds, fill the wood stove, shovel and just be outside. I don't want to come in once I make it out. I don't know where I'd be without Yaxtrax, probably on my face. Really nice pictures today. Had a hard time choosing one for my screen saver today.

Thanks for the up dates each morning I always relay them to my mom who loves Mt. Leconte . She is 71 years old and hiked up this past 4th of July .We had an awesome time at the lodge even though we were soaking wet the hole trip up and down.
