Throwing away then all things, hold to these only which are few; and besides bear in mind that every man lives only this present time, which is an indivisible point, and that all the rest of his life is either past or it is uncertain. Marcus Aurelius
Morning,

It was another mild evening. The low was only 34. The snow is only patchy at this point, but there will likely be a few icy sections on the trails. The high was 42 yesterday and it was 37/hazy at observation.

I had a great hike down Bullhead with a few friends yesterday morning. We got lunch at the Smoky Mountain Brewery and then they took off. I had a great hike back up Rainbow Falls.

I'm really looking forward to catching the Geminid Meteor shower this evening. I mistimed the lunar eclipse, so I'm really hoping for some clear skies tonight. Safe hiking!

Hey, JP! Loving the entries/photos every day. Thanks! I "clicked" on the Geminid Meteor shower and read about it. I love to watch meteor showers. The site said there is an app for counting the meteors for the IPhone. I am downloading it now and hopefully will have a chance to check it out tonight. Thanks for the Heads up. Have a great day!

If you folks are into astronomy and catching a glimpse of the International Space Station (ISS) as it flies overhead, then you should check out the Heavens Above website. http://www.heavens-above.com/

You can set your location by using the "location map" and find out local times the ISS will be visible with the naked eye from your location. You can also check out when planets will be overhead and even view a whole sky chart that shows how to recognize the constellations.

Dar, my brother hurt his knee on the way up last year and we opted to take Trillium instead of Alum back down. It may have been "easier", but no trails are easy with a bum knee. There were plenty of rocky areas that were difficult for him to get through and it is 1.5 miles longer. I think taking it easy and resting often along the way is best on Alum. No need to set any records, it took us 5 hours to get up but still had energy to check out the other amazing views once you get there.

Dar,
Alum Cave. Your friend with the knee issues needs to do a few things to prepare:
1) Get a good pair of hiking poles and get good at using them. Descending is what hammers the knees and poles allow you to mitigate a bunch of the pounding.
2) Walk some stairs. Building connective tissue strength helps hold things together, and the best way to do that is to descend stairs (WITHOUT a pack)
3) Get a knee brace.

Re Heavens above: Great site. We have seen the ISS several times over the years, and twice we have seen the shuttle just after it separated from the ISS. LeConte stars are outstanding!

Thanks Tom, poles check, knee brace check, last summer her and her hubby hiked Mt.Washburn in Yellowstone but it's pretty mellow as far as skick rocks.
