Good Morning,
The mountaintop is cloaked in a thick cloud of mystery and wonder to start this Thursday. Although we went to sleep seeing stars and bright city lights yesterday, overnight the intermittent rain showers and lightning displays weaved their way in and out of the Smokies. The wind picked up as well, and gusts upwards of 35mph are expected today. The clouds are likely to stick to us with the chances for more intermittent showers possible throughout the day. Who knows, maybe we’ll catch glimpses of some sun in between. Temps will remain mild, spending much of the time in the 50s today. Looks like by tomorrow conditions will improve for a sunny and beautiful Friday. Have a great day.

Good Afternoon,
We’re soaking up some sunshine once again today. All these warm rays are great for a recharge. Yesterday’s beautiful weather brought the crowds out in droves, likely the busiest the mountain top and trails have been all season. Temps are superb, currently hovering in the mid 60s. Overnight lows should remain in the low 50s for the time being. Beginning late tonight there is a slight chance for showers and storms. The turbulent weather is expected to linger through Thursday, with sunny skies returning in time to kickoff the weekend. Winds are calm for now but could get gusty tonight upwards of 30mph. Although we haven’t had any bear sightings around camp in recent days, we’re still hearing a lot of chatter about bear activity on trail. So be mindful of what you see, when, and where if you encounter any large wildlife. Have a great day. Good Morning,
We’re already halfway through May. Yesterday brought more dramatic skies and landscapes intermixed with sun and a rare mist. Today we’re starting off sufficiently socked in with cloud cover. There’s a chance of passing thunderstorms right around lunchtime today, along with some gusty winds. Temps will range from the upper 40s to upper 50s. So count on slightly chilly conditions at times without the sun shining. Tuesday looks significantly more promising for decent woods-walking weather. Clouds mostly obscured last night’s full moon and lunar eclipse, but occasional glimpses of the nighttime spectacle were enjoyed. Have a great day. Good Morning,
We’re in a continuous laundry cycle it seems of rinse-dry-repeat. These past few days have seen us start out sunny and mostly clear in the mornings, followed by cloudy and rainy afternoons, then capped off by clearing skies and dramatic sunsets. And you’d think someone left a light on with that big, bright, nearly full moon launching up from the east over High Top. The same is expected for today. After lunchtime, thunderstorms could build over the mountains and give us a few hours of rumbles and rain showers. Kudos to the folks who have been hitting the trails early in recent days to get out in front of the souring weather and avoid being drenched. Winds have the potential to be gusty this afternoon, but should otherwise be calm up top. Temps will feel nice as they range from the upper 40s to lower 60s. Have a great end to the week. Good Afternoon,
Happy Friday the 13th. What started out as a sunny spectacular morning on the mountain has transitioned over to a wall of clouds. Our splendid streak of steady sunshine and pleasant skies has finally drawn to a close. Sometime this afternoon our first round of rain showers and thunderstorms will arrive. Now through Monday the weather pattern will be a bit more chaotic, with chances for storms scattered throughout. Temps will remain fairly consistent with where we’ve been though, hovering between the upper 40s and lower 60s. Not much is expected in terms of winds. Come prepared for the conditions if you’re set on visiting the mountain this weekend. We got our first real taste of the season of bear activity in camp yesterday afternoon. A decent sized youngin’ nosing around the uphill side of lodge grounds. Remember to report any suspicious activity involving bears and other large wildlife to the NPS, and especially our staff if occurring near the lodge or backcountry shelter. It’s important we all take the necessary steps to protect ourselves and the wildlife. This is their home after all. Have a great day. Good Morning,
What a beautiful morning on Mt.LeConte to kickoff this Thursday. The air is calm, the skies are clear, and the colors from the day’s sunrise were as rich and vivid as ever. One just wakes up inspired after being greeted by such a spectacle. We have at least one more day of delightful weather ahead of us. We’ll bask in the sun today and enjoy temps from the upper 40s to mid 60s. Conditions are expected to sour for this coming weekend, starting with rain chances Friday afternoon. Saturday and Sunday could pit the mountain top in a struggle between sun and occasional thunderstorms, so have the rain shells ready. It’s impressive how fast the lodge grounds are greening up just in the past week. The grass is growing taller and the first flowers are making the pollinators happy. A beautiful time to be on the mountain. Have a great day. Good Morning,
Going to be another sunny and splendid day across the mountain. Some early morning fog is rocketing over the crest and obscuring the sunrise but should burn off and clear up as the hours tick by. We’ll get back into the 60s this afternoon with overnight lows still in the upper 40s. The air will start getting a little breezier at times today, with gusts of 25mph possible later, so it’d be good to have that wind breaking layer handy. With this nice stretch of sun we’ve had recently, trail conditions should be good and dry underfoot. Have a great day. Good Afternoon,
Our sunny and dry stretch of weekdays continues. We started out above the clouds once again for sunrise, and although the grey and white puffs have risen and been a bit clingy most of the morning, they seem to finally be losing the battle to the sunshine. Clear skies and warm temps are on the docket now until Friday when the precip returns. We’ll be bouncing between mid 60s for highs and lows in the upper 40s at night. Air is relatively calm today but will get a little breezier starting tomorrow. We’re around 14 hours of daylight now, sunrise happening at 6:30 AM and sunset about 8:30 PM. Not only does that mean more light for gallivanting through the woods, but guests staying overnight have ample time to catch sunrise at Myrtle Point before breakfast, and can comfortably chow down supper before making the evening ascent to Cliff Tops to close out the day. Warmer temps, longer days, greener vegetation, all signs that summer on the mountain is coming and quick. Have a great rest of the day. Good Morning,
A beautiful day on the mountain is in store for this second full week of May. A colorful sunrise and varying layers of clouds both high and low are giving guests a real treat to wake up to before breakfast. We’re expecting mostly sunny skies today with warmer temps than yesterday in the 40s and 50s. We’re almost to the point of the season where we can say with confidence that any notion of winter on Mt. LeConte is over. There’s just too much daylight and warm air pushing into the region now to give temps this high up a fighting chance at producing the white fluffy stuff. Hopefully we’re set on that until late autumn. The grounds around camp are really greening up as well. Dandelions and spring beauties are popping up in patches. And the walls of coneflower that put on a show in summer are already growing several inches in height. Always an invigorating sight to see the mountain come alive in spring. Have a great day. Good Afternoon,
We made it through the deluge! These past two days produced nearly 3.2” of rainfall on the mountain. Yesterday the lodge was in a constant weeping cloud, keeping everyone and everything thoroughly soaked. Thankfully all the guests who endured yesterday’s slog has been treated to a splendidly sunny Sunday. We started out with a tantalizing sunrise over a cloud sea this morning, although the clouds have risen a bit to obscure much of our view to the north. It’s slightly cool with temps in the 40s. These next several weekdays look great for conditions to dry out and warm up. Should make for some great hiking. Have a great rest of the day. |
