Happy Halloween

10/31/2011

The crew was putting the day to bed. It was time to chill out and enjoy the last of the cold October evenings. Dave decided to leave the warmth of the kitchen to make his way to his room at the bottom of camp. As he was making his way down the rocky path, he thought he heard something. He thought, "it is just one of the many guests we have in camp this evening." He continued his commute home and heard the noise again. He knew he was close to his cabin, he would go inside and not worry about it. He reached the bottom of the path and went for the door knob. He did not expect to find.......

A BIG BEAR standing in his path!!!!!!

                        HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!

We don't have ghosts on the mountain, but we have other things that go bump in the night.
Before you get worried and say you are never visiting LeConte again, the rest of the story goes something like this...
Dave screamed and picked up a rock and threw it at the bear. The bear got scared and turned around and ran. I think Dave scared the bear more then the bear scared Dave.

I borrowed the photo to show you what we kept seeing around camp last night.

Snow Day

10/30/2011

It was a cold day on the mountain. The temperature hovered in the low twenties all day. The low last night was 18 degrees. The sun is shining this morning. Hopefully that will help warm it up and melt some of the ice.

Snowball Fight Anyone?

"Snow provokes responses that reach right back to childhood. "- Andy Goldsworthy

The sight of fresh falling snow makes the kid in all of us come out. Time for snowball fights on the mountain. We have about half an inch of fresh powder and it is still coming down. The low last night was 23 and we are currently at 22 degrees. It did rain all day yesterday, so there is a nice layer of ice underneath the beautiful snow. If you are hiking up today, you will probably want some form of ice walker. For example, yaktrax, micro-spikes, stabilicers, or any other form of in-step crampon. Please make sure you have plenty of warm layers, water, and snacks for you hike up. Take your time and enjoy the beauty.

More Snow?????

10/28/2011

The rain has settled in. Looks as though we have a chance for more snow this evening. The high yesterday was 57 with a low of 38. The temperatures are expected to drop tonight. We could wake up to a winter wonderland. If you are hiking today or tomorrow, make sure you have plenty of layers to take on and off. The idea is to stay dry and warm.

Warm Blanket and a Cup of Hot Cocoa

The sun was out for just a brief moment this morning. It quickly gave way to clouds and rain. It is currently drizzling and 43 degrees on the mountain. It is a great day to read.

Hello Mountain

It feels good to be home. Chris and I had an excellent hike up yesterday. You could not have asked for better weather. There is still a bit color hanging on in the lower elevations. A lot of day hikers were out taking advantage of the day. We are ready to knock the last of the season out. We have 28 days left. My how time flies when you are having fun. The high yesterday was 61 with a low last night of 41. I did not see any northern lights. I heard they were visible the night before. I have witnessed the incredible light display a couple of times from the mountain. It is an amazing sight to see.

Good day, sunshine!

10/25/2011

It is the most gorgeous day on the mountain!  Although, I think being ANYwhere in the area would probably be amazing today!  There is barely a cloud in the sky and we are up to 62 degrees.  Apparently, last night it dropped down about freezing, but when I went in at 5 am it was already 40 degrees.  It has warmed up quite nicely.

On my last morning cooking breakfast during this stint, I would like to share a picture of the beauiful sunrise I saw during breakfast preparations.  Chris and Allyson will be back later today and I will hand the reins back to her.  Until next month...

Great way to start the week

10/24/2011

What a great start to the week?  I awoke to much warmer temperatures this morning, which made me very happy.  It only dipped down to 35 last night.  We are expecting very pleasant weather for the next few days and couldn't be more thrilled.  Yesterday, it almost reached 53 and hoping for slightly higher today.  Even though many of the colors have already turned, it is still a nice time to get out and hike.  Hope everyone can make it up again before the end of the season!  Have a wonderful day!

The snow is almost a distant memory.

Warm and sunny, again!

10/23/2011

I always appreciated Sundays as a day of rest and relaxation; however, on such a beautiful day it's hard not to get out and enjoy it.  Or at least get a few chores done.  Today has turned into a good day to do laundry!  Having the sun will help dry the clothes so much faster on the line.  We are quite warm today compared to our recent history.  Yesterday we reached 46 and only dropped to 31 overnight.  It is currently hovering around 50.  The snow is almost completely melted, except in those shaded areas where the sun never reaches.  Hopefully, the snow stays away for a while!

Wonderful Weather Weekend

10/22/2011

It is a gorgeous morning!  The sun is out in full effect and the snow is beginning to melt away.  There may be a few slick spots, but overall I expect the trails to be in fairly good condition.  I have not had any guests or day hikers notify us of any treacherous areas.  Just take your time!

Yesterday turned out to be a pretty nice day.  We had lots of sun in the early afternoon, giving way to some clouds later in the afternoon and it actually got above freezing.  It was a high of 36 and dropped to 22 again overnight.

Scott decided to get out and enjoy the day by hiking down to Brushy Mountain.  He took some pictures I would like to share with you.  Have a great weekend!
