Snowball Fight Anyone?

10/29/2011

Picture
"Snow provokes responses that reach right back to childhood. "- Andy Goldsworthy

The sight of fresh falling snow makes the kid in all of us come out. Time for snowball fights on the mountain. We have about half an inch of fresh powder and it is still coming down. The low last night was 23 and we are currently at 22 degrees. It did rain all day yesterday, so there is a nice layer of ice underneath the beautiful snow. If you are hiking up today, you will probably want some form of ice walker. For example, yaktrax, micro-spikes, stabilicers, or any other form of in-step crampon. Please make sure you have plenty of warm layers, water, and snacks for you hike up. Take your time and enjoy the beauty.

Your blog is such a gift for those of us who long for an escape to freedom from all the trappings of modern day living. What a gift you are.

@ James C, James, I live outside Pigeon Forge in Wears Valley. Although i work out of town i am home most week-ends on friday and saturday. Always love going to LeConte. Would be more than happy to hike up with you some week-end if i'm available. Let me know if that might work for you.

WOW! I love the picture with the snow on the steps and the bright warm inviting stove fire inside. Ya'll are SOOO lucky to be where you are every day and not just one day a year like most of us and be able to view the various stages of mother nature from LeConte. Look forward to tomorrow's picture.

Came up the first time on OCT 25th. We enjoyed the clear sky both day and night. Our visit could have not been better. Jim & I were able to capture a spectacular sunset & sunrise both without any haze. Luck was on our side. The lodge experience was wonderful, like being a kid again.

Andy Goldsworthy is my favorite artist. I did a report on his work while I was in college. His work is amazing. If you have never seen any of it google image search it. I think most the people who love this web site work really appreciate his work.

Allyson... love the shot from inside the dining room. All you need are stockings hung by the fire!

My 27th hike up and the most beautiful ever with the snow and the sun breaking through finally at Alum. Of course 27 paled in comparison to my friend Keny who wa sitting in the cozy office after his 130th trip. I signed a shirt for him again and told him it was my second time as I signed another one a few years ago.

Alison thanks for the hot chocolate and remember only 26 more till a little relaxation. You have done another wonderful job in 2011.

Terrific time - the Ascent: Alum Cave to LeConte 5.2 miles. Dinner and wine were delicious. Cliff Top Sunset Point 0.6 miles unfortunately had "0" visibility. After dinner it was great hanging out in common room, w/stories, and guitar players and singing. Descent: 6.5 mile Trillium Gap trail, rocky, wet, loved seeing llamas on their way up & Grotto Falls. We had a taxi meet us at the bottom of Trillium Gap Trail so that we could hike up Alum Cave. Highly recommend it.
