Sunset light creeping through the trees.
What a beautiful day yesterday turned into! By lunchtime the rain had stopped, the clouds burned off and we were left with a beautiful afternoon. The high only reached 39, but the sun felt warm. The overnight low was 27 and this morning was clear and calm. There's not a cloud in the sky and it's almost 50 degrees! Most of the ice is melting off, but I would still bring traction just in case there are slick places on the trails.

BIG LECONTE ANNOUNCEMENT:

     BRAD AND NICHOLETTE ARE ENGAGED!!!!!!!
(And we all couldn't be happier for them!)

Yesterday's walk out to Myrtle Point.
Morning, ya'll. Well, there's not much to be said about the weather today other than it's a little on the miserable side. Yesterday was beautiful though, with sunshine and blue skies and the temperature finally reaching above freezing at an almost balmy 38. The low was 6, but that was more from yesterday morning's reading as temperatures hung right above freezing over night. Just cold enough to deliver .8" of rain instead of more snow, making for a slushy morning. As of right now, we have dipped below freezing again, around 30 degrees. This is going to make for some treacherous conditions walking around camp as the ice refreezes, not to mention the hike up! Everyone just be aware and pay attention to your steps while hiking today. Watch out for ice especially on top of snow!
   Keep safe and warm today!

Lovely blues and purples facing opposite of sunset last night.
It's starting to finally warm up! Yesterday's high only reached 21 and the over night low was 3. This morning, the kitchen was so cold that it felt like rolling out concrete when I was making out biscuits. But the sun is out and shinning and there isn't a cloud in the sky (for now, of course) and the temperature is steadily rising! It's about 30 now and I believe we will be above freezing by this afternoon.

The trails, at the very least the top portions, are still very slick, so be very careful if you are coming up today. Use that traction!

I think I will spend this lovely Sunday afternoon in the woods myself...

Yesterday, before the heavy snow started.

....and then this morning at 5:30.
Good morning from a frozen mountain top! We awoke to about 6.5" of powdery snow this morning and very cold temperatures. Yesterday's high only reached 27 and the low this morning was 6. As of right now, the temperature has not reached double digits, sitting around 8, but the sun is burning off the cloud cover and we are starting to see blue skies!
As of right now, 441 is closed, but they are working to reopen it. Cherokee Orchard Rd is open. For anyone planning on hiking up today I would encourage you to absolutely bring traction- in fact, please only attempt the hike with the proper gear in snowy conditions! This includes, for the most part, traction for your feet, gators if you have them, wool socks, extra wool socks, hats, gloves, ect....mostly though, NO COTTON! I want everyone to make it up safe and happy!
Enjoy this beautiful day and do so safely!

Hello again, winter...

The stairs this morning.
Apologies for the lack of blog yesterday. I was feeling too under the weather to even give the weather...but with the help of sleep, tea and cold medicine, I'm back in the game today!

We have snow today! Yesterday's weather stayed fairly mild with the high at 51 and the low reaching 26 overnight. Rain came in right around 9 last night, giving us 3.8" and turning into flurries of frozen mist around 6 this morning. The temperature is continuing to drop, now around 24 and the snow is really starting the pile up quickly. Absolutely bring your traction if you are planning on hiking today! (I've already slipped myself this morning...very graceful.)

The llamas made their second successful trip to the lodge yesterday. It is always a joy to see Chrissy and Allen at the same time, as rare as that is!

     Ya'll stay warm today!

Sunset from last night.
It is a windy day on the mountain. Our overnight low was 32 and yesterday's high reached 52. Today is a little chilly, in the lower 40's and the day started out in a cloud, but things are starting to blow off and the sky is turning blue. Even as I'm typing the sun is peaking through my skylight!

And now, the 2015 LeConte Lodge Christmas ornament!

Sunset last night was beautiful.
The first day was a success! Everybody made it out unscathed and the lodge is still standing, so that is a win in my book! Yesterday was a warmish mix of sunshine and clouds with a high of 46 and the overnight low at 32. Today looks to be shaping up about the same way, mostly sun so far with intermittent clouds and the temperature around 40.
     And now, back to work!

First day of the season!

First official sunrise of the season.
Good morning and welcome to the start (officially) of the 2015 LeConte Lodge season! We were so ahead of schedule by yesterday with all of our opening tasks that we ended up with a whole day off to relax and hike. It was both odd and wonderful to have an entire day on the mountain void of responsibility and practically alone at the lodge.
This morning the weather is looking great for hiking! Our high yesterday was 51 with a low of 31, we had 2.3" of precipitation and even had a few snow showers around dusk last night. But there is no snow on the ground today, just blue skies! It is a bit chilly this morning, around 36, so don't forget your layers of course.
Also, a reminder that Trillium Gap is still closed to the public (although the llamas will be up tomorrow for their first trip of the season!).

Alright, ya'll, hold on to your hats because this is the beginning of a brand new season- in more ways than one. It is going to be amazing.

First inversion of the season.
It almost feels like spring at the lodge today! The sun is shinning and it is almost 50 degrees. Quite the contrast from yesterday's high of 41 with a low of 31 and .34" of foggy rain. It is beautiful weather to hike in and everyone knows it judging by how many people are already up top. It seems as though people are slowly but surely awakening from their winter daze and remembering who they are with the sun on their faces. I know that for me, I feel like a completely new person every spring and this one is certainly getting of to a beautiful start!

Another misty day on the mountain, but Happy Spring anyway!

Edgar in the mist...
Happy first day of spring, everyone! It's another soggy day up top, but at least today it feels a little warmer, hovering around 40 for the most part. Yesterday's high was 43 with a low of 31 and the mountain received 1.2" of steady rain.

Someone asked about water on the mountain and we turned on the blue handled spigot in front of the office today. So if ya'll are hiking up this weekend, you will be able to drink the best water in the state! Someone else asked about the shirt color selection this year and tomorrow (hopefully when there is better light, come on sun!) I'll take a picture of the selection to show you all.

The crew is taking their CPR certification class today! It is something I hope they will never have to use while on the mountain, but also something I'm sure everyone is glad that they will know how to do!
