Yesterday, before the heavy snow started.

....and then this morning at 5:30.
Good morning from a frozen mountain top! We awoke to about 6.5" of powdery snow this morning and very cold temperatures. Yesterday's high only reached 27 and the low this morning was 6. As of right now, the temperature has not reached double digits, sitting around 8, but the sun is burning off the cloud cover and we are starting to see blue skies!
As of right now, 441 is closed, but they are working to reopen it. Cherokee Orchard Rd is open. For anyone planning on hiking up today I would encourage you to absolutely bring traction- in fact, please only attempt the hike with the proper gear in snowy conditions! This includes, for the most part, traction for your feet, gators if you have them, wool socks, extra wool socks, hats, gloves, ect....mostly though, NO COTTON! I want everyone to make it up safe and happy!
Enjoy this beautiful day and do so safely!

What I wouldn't give to be at the Lodge in those conditions ! That cabin looks like my favorite one, Cabin No. 9 at the end of that upper row ! Very nice. Maybe there will be some snow when I get up there Apr 9th. g'day

Mike: Don't worry, you'll never know that I was even there ! Like in my hiking and camping, I'm a leave-no-trace guy.

Looks the way it looked last year when we came up in March, except you've got more sun this year. We've been up several times in March and had great weather till last year. This year we'll be up in September. Cannot wait!

Cabin #9 never looked more beautiful than in your first photo. We've requested that cabin for the past 3 visits. Love cabin #9 and LeConte Lodge. Counting the days to come back to our second home on the mountain.

Just curious, how do you stay warm up there since there is no electricity? The pictures are beautiful. Bet it's peaceful up there.

The lodge has gas heat. The snow pictures at Leconte so pretty. Wished I was there to shovel steps or hike around.

Propane heat for warmth and kerosene lamps for light. ;)

My two favorite places....snow in the smokies and 84 degrees and sunny here today in central Texas! I just wish that one winter we would get some measurable snow here! We just missed the big snow there this past Oct/Nov by a day or so. Oh how I wish we would have been able to stay there to see that!

Just where are you located. I am looking for a place to go in the next couple of months. Thanks

Thelma, if you are asking me, I live in the Austin area. It's a really great place to visit and live! But the summers are extremely hot and we don't have four distinct seasons lIke in the GSMNP. That's why I visit the park several times a year. So beautiful and peaceful to me. That's also why I love this blog so much. It makes me feel connected every day eventhough I'm not there.
