Good Morning,
Wow. Already the last day of June is upon us. We’re now over 100 days into the season as time continues to fly by. Starting off with some partial clouds and low lying fog, but otherwise today should turn out to be mostly sunny conditions. There is an ever-so-slight chance of an afternoon shower. Temps will be between the lower 50s and mid 60s today with calm winds. We’re due for one more hot and humid day here in East TN before we experience a welcomed cool down. Talking highs in the 70s for the lower elevations once the forecasted rain pushes through tomorrow and Friday. Shaping up to be a stellar looking holiday weekend though that should be great for enjoying the outdoors. Between annual parades, firework displays, and the 4th occurring on the weekend, expect a great deal of traffic in our area. So plan your routes to and from the Mt. LeConte trailheads accordingly. And bring a heavy dose of patience, especially if one throws bear or elk sightings into the mix. Have a great day.

Good Morning,
The sun is shining and the birds are chirping to begin this Tuesday atop our island in the sky. Conditions across the Smokies this morning should remain fairly decent until rain and pop-up thunderstorm chances increase for this afternoon. It doesn’t appear as though the waning Tropical Depression Danny is going to pose much of a threat to us as it peters out to the south. Temps are currently in the mid 50s and we expect to get into the mid 60s later today. Winds will remain light during the day but could ramp up this evening, gusting up to 20mph. The forecast for Wednesday looks very similar to today. Going to be another hot and humid day in the lower elevations, so sounds like a visit to the lodge is the perfect way to beat the heat. Have a great day. Good Morning,
We’ve got a typical summer forecast ahead of us as we roll through the final days of June and toward the great American holiday. Sunny mornings followed by isolated storms during the afternoon are exactly how we’re kicking off the new week. Skies are gorgeous above the Smokies currently, with breakfast temps in the mid 50s. Could get close to 70° this afternoon. Clouds are expected to build throughout the day and could produce passing showers. The percentages look stronger for rainy activity on Tuesday. Winds to remain rather light. It’s going to be a hot and humid week, especially down their in the lowlands, so be diligent about staying hydrated and well nourished before, during, and after your hike. Your body will thank you for taking the proactive approach! Have a great day. Good Morning,
Up close and personal with the clouds this morning. We’ll be lucky to shake them off today and catch any sunshine. Late this morning and throughout the afternoon the chances for rain and thunderstorms popping up across the region increases. Conditions should begin to clear overnight and Monday is supposed to be a much more pleasant day for playing in the woods. Temps are currently in the mid 50s and we should get into the mid 60s this afternoon. Nothing crazy expected from the wind in the coming days. Have the rain shells ready and use caution at creek crossings if an isolated rain shower rolls in and decides to unload later. The white bloom clusters of the Rosebay Rhododendron are starting to unfurl in the lower elevations. In the coming weeks they’ll be making their annual climb up the slopes. Have a great rest of the weekend. Good Morning,
Hello weekend. The forecast has turned more favorable for rambles in the woods today. A reduced chance of afternoon showers that becomes more prominent for Sunday. Going to see a lot of clouds today with a little bit of sunshine mixed in, much like yesterday. Winds will remain calm but could ramp up this evening. Temps are starting out in the upper 40s and should rise into the mid 60s this afternoon. If yesterday was any indication, it’s going to be a busy last June weekend in the park, so be ready for the crowds of tourists and local weekend warriors. Reminder to not feed the wildlife and pack out all trash. Have a great day. Good Morning,
Rolling into the last weekend of the month and it’s shaping up to be a decent one for outdoor exploration. We’re waking up to cloud-capped mountains, but that status is not expected to last. Forecast is calling for mostly sunny skies over East TN for at least one more solid day. Temps are currently in the upper 40s but should have no problem breaking the mid 60s this afternoon. Winds to be light during the day and then gusting upwards of 25mph overnight. Saturday will start off nicely, but clouds could build as the day progresses with the chance for thunderstorm development in the afternoon and early evening. So unless you have plans of racing up and down the mountain before lunch, good to have that rain shell handy in case the weather sours late tomorrow. With such a promising forecast, one can expect the park to be drawing in the crowds, so bring patience for the drive and when scoping out the popular trailheads. There also tend to be more traffic jams caused by wildlife sightings in the summer, namely bears, deer, and turkeys, so pay extra attention if and when visitors decide to exit their vehicles and occupy the roadway. Have a great day. Good Morning,
Already heading into the final week of June. It was a refreshingly cool and clear day on the mountain Wednesday as the forecast failed to disappoint. We’ve got another couple days just like it on tap as we push toward the weekend. Today and tomorrow will see mostly sunny skies over the Smokies with high temps getting up into the mid 60s and our overnight lows in the bottom 50s. Going to be a little breezier though with wind gusts getting up around 25mph. The Dwarf Rhododendron have been starting to bloom this last week, adding their sweet smell to the air as hikers reach the mid elevation of their hike. The Catawba Rhododendron continue to show out closer to the top. Down by one’s feet, you’ve got several small plants beginning to unfurl that should start flowering in the coming weeks. Eye-catching species like Wood Sorrel, Mountain St. John’s Wort, and Rugel’s Ragwort just to name a few. Have a great day. Good Morning,
What a beautiful morning overlooking East Tennessee! Going to be a gorgeous day across the Smokies. Starting off a little cool for late June, but pleasant nonetheless. Waking up to temps in the mid 40s, and should surpass the 60° mark by this afternoon. Looking at abundant sunshine-filled skies today and leading into the weekend before any thought of rain returns. Winds will remain rather calm to nonexistent. Trails will still need a little longer to dry out after yesterday morning’s gully washer, and creek crossings could be running above average still. Other than that, enjoy the views and delightful mountain air. Have a great day. Good Morning,
Oh, it’s nice to hear the sound of rain on rooftops. The earth is thankful to get a drink, and we’re thankful for the cool down after yesterday’s scorcher. Storms have been rolling through the region all night and will be dumping rain on the mountains into the afternoon before dissipating. Trails are going to be a wet and muddy mess most likely, and there will be runoff rushing down drainages that could create some wet unbridged crossings. Best to avoid trails like Rainbow Falls with its hazardous crossing of LeConte Creek a few tenths above the falls. We could see some sunshine later today and guests might just be treated to a sunset after enduring today’s soaker. The next few days look quite pleasant calling for abundant sunshine. Going to be much cooler today, with highs not escaping the 50s and our overnight low set to be down in the 40s. Winds will be light. Remember, if you come across any trail hazards that could make passage difficult or impossible, especially on trails like Trillium Gap or Alum Cave, let us and/or the NPS know so that it can be addressed promptly. Have a great day. Good Morning,
Despite the daunting forecast, yesterday actually turned out to be a pretty decent day on the mountain. We managed to dodge any rain from Claudette that all seemed to stay well to the south, and we got to enjoy more sunshine than anticipated. Today should be similar as far as intermittent clouds and sun, with slight chances for rain this afternoon. Winds have already picked up, and we could witness gusts upwards of 25mph. Temps will warm today, especially down below, as we are starting off in the mid 50s and could reach 70° this afternoon. A cool down is expected for Tuesday that will see our overnight lows drop back into the 40s. Today marks the summer solstice and longest dose of daylight for the year. We’re logging just over 14.5 hours of light these days, with sunrise happening a quarter after 6:00 and sunset a touch before 9:00. Have a great start to the new week. |
