Good Morning.
Going to be a mostly cloudy and rainy Father’s Day on the mountain. Our region is set to catch some lingering outer bands from Tropical Storm Claudette as it passes well to the south of us. The Smokies’ peaks are currently cloud-capped and intermittent showers are expected to cycle through. Winds should remain calm before picking up some steam overnight and into Monday. Temps are starting off in the lower 50s and we hope to reach the mid 60s this afternoon. The beginning of the coming week shows some rain chances as well, so come prepared for varying weather conditions, typical for a summer day on Mt. LeConte. Have a great end to the week.

Good Morning,
Shaping up to be a pretty decent weekend on the mountain. The forecast continues to improve as it relates to reduced rain chances, with only a slight possibility late tonight and then again Sunday afternoon. There will be considerably more clouds this weekend than we’ve seen in recent days, but even the lack of sunshine won’t affect the heat wave lambasting the South. If you are in need of reprieve, it might help to know that our morning temp is in the lower 50s, and we’ll only be getting into the upper 60s this afternoon. Winds will be calm during the day but are expected to increase slightly overnight, gusting as much as 20mph. It doesn’t appear as though Tropical Storm Claudette poses much of a threat for our region as it churns up and out of the Gulf over the coming days. Have a great day. Good Morning,
It’s hard to top a Tennessee sunset or sunrise, and we have sure had a great run of them this past week. Looks like we’re due for at least a couple more with this stretch of stellar weather. Rolling out of bed with temps in the mid 40s again this morning, but it’s going to get a good bit warmer up top this afternoon. A high of around 70° is possible today, so expect it to be that much warmer down below at the various trailheads. Winds are also expected to ramp up this evening with gusts above 20mph. For the weekend warriors who have Mt. LeConte in their sights, it’s going to be a mixed bag of treats, as the forecast is calling for afternoon showers and thunderstorms in the coming days. So have the rain gear handy even if the beginning of your hike looks like radiant sunshine. Conditions can turn quickly in these mountains. Have a great day. Good Morning,
Sunny skies, starry night, and back to sunny skies. We’re deep into a beautiful stretch of days here on the mountain. Going to be on the slightly cooler side once again high above East Tennessee, but it sure feels great compared to getting cooked down below. We’re starting off in the mid 40s for consecutive breakfasts, but today we’ll gradually make the climb out of the cellar and begin to see warmer average temps. The lodge should have no problem getting into the lower 60s this afternoon. Friday and now Saturday are showing plenty of sunshine in the forecast, with Sunday afternoon calling for the return of turbulent skies. It seems travelers are well aware of that fact and eagerly flocking to the mountain. A lot of folks visiting the summit and nearby landmarks to admire the grand vistas and soak up the refreshing waters of streams and falls. Have a great day. Good Morning,
A little cooler to start this morning in the waning days of spring. Watching the sunrise to mostly clear skies with temps in the mid 40s. Even with abundant sunshine on tap for today, it’s supposed to remain cool as we might barely scrape 60°. Winds should remain calm, but present enough that adding an extra layer might help for warmth. Starting tomorrow our temps should slowly slide back up to more seasonal norms, with continued sunshine until the weekend. Come Saturday the chance for those typical afternoon thunderstorms returns. The Catawba Rhododendron are creeping up the mountain side and will be putting on a show for a few more weeks yet. The Mountain Laurel are out in force in the middle elevations. Even though the grounds around the lodge are greening up, we’re still about a month away from witnessing our grand display of summer colors. Have a great day. Good Morning,
Well yesterday turned out to be cloudier much longer than anticipated, but eventually by late afternoon the grey veil loosened its grip on the mountain. It doesn’t look like we’ll have a repeat performance today, as the skies are mostly clear and the sun is shining over the lodge. There is a light breeze, and conditions will feel a bit cooler these next couple days. We’re starting off in the low 50s this morning and should only get into the lower 60s later. These next couple nights we could actually dip down into the 40s. Even in mid June, there can still be a chill in the air this high up. After today the repaving project happening along US 441 (Newfound Gap Rd) will be taking its two month summer hiatus. The work is slated to resume August 16. When that work will be happening around the Alum Cave trailhead has not been pinpointed yet, but when it does, visitors can count on significantly less parking being available due to partial parking lot and roadside closures for at least a couple days. Once we know more, we’ll of course make those details known so visitors can plan their hikes accordingly. Have a great day. Good Morning,
Starting the week off in a thick soupy cloud. Conditions are considerably calm and decently warm, already in the upper 50s for breakfast this morning. Temps should ascend into the upper 60s for this afternoon. This blanket of clouds ought to lift as they day progresses and see the return of some glorious sunshine. There is a slight chance for thunderstorm development this afternoon, so have that rain shell handy just in case one decides to pass over our mountain. It could get a little breezy tonight, calling for gusts near 20mph. Otherwise the rest of the work week looks pretty stellar for rambles in the woods. It was a nice change of scenery to have sunshine yesterday after such a long stint of constant clouds and rain. Last night’s sunset was that much more appreciated. Even though we were under the stars, there was an impressive lightning show that could be seen to the northeast. Not an unusual sight when summer arrives in the Smokies. Have a great day. Good Morning,
It appears we finally paid our dues for getting all these cloudy and rainy days of late. Beginning today and lasting for the next several days we’re looking at much clearer and calmer skies. The sunshine should be abundant, with calm winds, and warm temps. Currently kicking things off in the mid 50s this morning and we ought to jump into the upper 60s this afternoon. The sunlight and warmth will help to dry out the trails in the coming days, and it should certainly inspire folks to get outside and explore the mountain. The further we dive into the summer season, the hotter and more humid our region gets. So remember to stay adequately nourished and hydrated before and during your hike to the mountain. The average person is going to perspire and feel the weight of the hot and sticky air a lot more this time of year. Have a great end to the week. Good Morning,
The second weekend of June is upon just like that. It’s a cloudy start to the day, yet again, with a solid chance of showers and thunderstorms on tap for this afternoon. If you’re quick, you could get up and down the mountain this morning for a day hike before conditions sour. Although views will be difficult to come by. Temps are to remain in lock step with where we’ve been, between lower 50s and lower 60s. Winds are expected to be a little breezier today, with gusts upwards of 20mph possible at times. Sunday should finally be the day we start to see improvement in the forecast and hopefully the return of some sunshine. Trails are still going to be wet and muddy in low lying or poorly draining areas, especially after yesterday’s persistent rains. Have a great day. Good Morning,
Clouds and rain is the name of the game this weekend. Friday is already off to a wet and grey start to the day. The gloomy conditions will persist throughout the day and well into Saturday. Rain and thunderstorms will be intermixed, so have the rain shells ready and don’t expect much sunshine for a bit. Temps are in the low 50s currently and we should ascend into the lower 60s this afternoon. Winds to remain light. Trail conditions are going to be sloppy in places, and trails with unbridged stream/drainage crossings could be running a tad higher, so use caution during and after any potential downpours. Mainly on paths like Rainbow Falls, Bull Head, and Trillium Gap higher up the mountain. Stay dry and have a great day. |
