Wonderful Weather Weekend

10/22/2011

It is a gorgeous morning!  The sun is out in full effect and the snow is beginning to melt away.  There may be a few slick spots, but overall I expect the trails to be in fairly good condition.  I have not had any guests or day hikers notify us of any treacherous areas.  Just take your time!

Yesterday turned out to be a pretty nice day.  We had lots of sun in the early afternoon, giving way to some clouds later in the afternoon and it actually got above freezing.  It was a high of 36 and dropped to 22 again overnight.

Scott decided to get out and enjoy the day by hiking down to Brushy Mountain.  He took some pictures I would like to share with you.  Have a great weekend!

Thanks for these new and awesome pics. I'd never seen any of Brushy Mountain. Is that the trail to LeConte that isn't as maintained or well marked as the other 5? I've been up all of them but thought I'd heard or read where there is one called brushy mountain that usually only seasoned hikers use and can you tell me where it starts out? I don't plan on hiking it but am curious. Thanks.

Going to try this again. I've tried a couple times to post something (and it wasn't anything that could not be posted) so I'm wondering if since you all had trouble posting maybe there's still trouble. Anyway wanted to say the pics of brushy mountain are awesome and it is nice to see another area of the Smokies. Is this the trail that also goes up to LeConte but is not well maintained and pretty rough. I've been up all of the others and don't plan on going up this but would like to know where the trailhead starts just for reference. thanks.

...enjoying the pictures & the weather reports. We're packed & headed to the GSMNP tomorrow (Sunday). My brother & I will be taking The Trillium Gap Trail up to the lodge on Tuesday & The Bull Head down on Wednesday morning. The long range forecast looks good. I can taste the great food in the dinning hall already! See y'all then!

I could put a small cabin in the top picture and stay the rest of my life. Very beautiful up there and trying to get there next season.

@Marilyn
Brushy Mountain is the sixth trail to LeConte. It is well marked and starts a few miles EAST of Gatlinburg and runs about 10 miles from the start in Greenbrier to the Lodge. Technically, the trail ends at Brushy Mountain which is gorgeous in the spring. The trail joins the Trillium Gap trail at Trillium Gap. Turn left at Trillium Gap to follow the Trillium Gap Trail to the Lodge, turn right to do the 1/2 mile spur to Brushy Mountain, or go straight and take the trail down past Grotto Falls to the Trillium Gap trailhead.
The trail is long and has a few nice elements to it, particularly at the beginning. If you are the sort that wants to hike ALL the trails to LeConte Lodge, then Brushy Mountain needs to be on your list.
One of the Rangers did ALL the trails to LeConte in a day (somewhere in a previous blog) and I challenged whether he had done ALL of the trails. The response was that yes he had INCLUDING the Brushy Mountain Trail. It is well marked.

Tomk

thanks for the info. I seem to remember once being on a trail in greenbrier and seeing a sign that said brushy mountain. I also think I know where the spur is off trillium. I may have to put on my list since i really would like to do all 6 and if it is well marked i'd be willing to try. appreciate your help.
