11.16.16. It's beginning to feel a lot like ....the Arctic

11/16/2016

It. Is. Cold up here!

45/26 are the temps and it sounds like we're in for a very cold weekend, cold as in possibility of single digits.

Pack your fleeces and layers! That, and raingear. There is a chance of rain this weekend but you never know what might happen, be prepared for anything.

Alum Cave is open officially tomorrow! Thank the trail crew, they did a fantastic job and it took a lot of effort!

Due to the dryness in the park all campfires and grill use is prohibited. Anyone who uses cigarettes, cigars, or pipes is asked to be especially careful due to the possibility of starting a fire accidentally.

It it is hard for us to know how the air quality is down mountain so please check your local weather stations and websites for their ratings. We do see how hazy it is down in the valley and get a whiff once and a while but some areas are affected worse than others so please check your specific areas for better information.

Only 3 llama trips left until the end of season!

I have seen dozens and dozens of questions here and on other sites about what to prepare for when hiking in the Smokies. There's really but a single answer to that question and you said it quite succinctly in four words above: 'BE PREPARED FOR ANYTHING" That should do it....................................

When hiking miles into a trail and you are thinking " man another section of steps" then you remember someone had to pack those supplies up and build them.... we forget sometimes the work that goes into a long trail in the mountains.

everyone that hikes should help build one some time.

Well stated Dar. And just imagine those pioneers who originally built these trails ! What was it like before those trails even existed !? I almost shudder to consider the efforts and time that went into their creation. People a lot more rugged than what we are today.
