Whew!

It is wonderful outside today, sunny with a slight breeze.

We has a nice 64/49 day yesterday with tons of cool guests!

Jess was able to connect with some fellow knitters, we met some craft artisans, and there was a Poole party.

We up on LeConte do a lot of different things on our days off.

Matt, for instance went to go check out the Roan and Maxpatch areas and Pauleen just got back from Mt. Mitchell.

Where would you guys recommend for us to go next?

Also, does anyone know if Ramseys Cascade will be open anytime soon?

A wonderful day hike at mile 420 on the Blue Ridge is across Black Balsam Knob to Tennant Mountain to Shining Rock. BB Knob will be crowded but the crowds thin out greatly after that. On a clear day you can see Mt. Mitchell.

To respond to yesterday's question I will have to say that my favorite book is Cumberland Jack by Paul Adams

Didn't know that Ramsey trail was closed. And I think if I worked up there, on my day off I would just stay put. I couldn't get enough of the place.

Jeff is right about the hike to Shinning Rock, but that is a crowed area. Other great views can be found at the Mt Sterling And Mt Cammerer towers. For some quiet solitude the Cook Cabin in little Catalooche is good. The hike along Big Creek up to the steel beam bridge is great if you want views of the beautiful clear waters of a fast moving creek.
Happy exploring, I am looking forward to a day trip to Leconte during the third week in October.

The spring storms wash away the bridge and blow down every where.

I cannot remember how long the Park anticipates working on the Alum trail, into next year? I have intentions, after hopefully another visit up to the Lodge next year, to do some hiking in the big Creek area where I haven't hiked in many years. Two nice waterfalls are just above the campground, too. I really try to avoid the crowds elsewhere. But even in these mercifully emancipated "modern" decades, many people still seem quite seriously alarmed at the prospect of sleeping away from officially consecrated campsites, with no more equipment than they can carry on their backs - - the very thought almost terrifies them. When pressed, they babble about snakes or bears or even, by George, bandits ! But the real barrier, I am convinced of, is the unknown. I don't feel fear when I'm deep in the Park's backcountry, just awe. Balsam Mountain is another area I want to revisit, especially the campground there. G'day............

Alum Cave trail will be open 7 days a week starting November 18, 2016. The project will then be complete.

Twentymile loop in Fontana! Beautiful trail with lots of bear sign! Just did this trail last weekend and stayed at the Fontana Hilton lol! Met some section hikers on the AT. You will love the area :)

The trip to Mt. Camerer fire tower is well worth the trip. It has fantastic views no matter what the weather is like.
