A little snow on the mountain

5/6/2016

It was a cold,  windy day on the mountain with the high 29 and low 26 with about 3 inches of snow. All of the guests made it last night.  It is currently 30 with warming trend predicted, but still will be windy. Dress in layers.   The snow line seems to be about 4000 feet and above. The trails are slushy and icy in some places.  Be prepared for wet and cold feet so pack extra socks.  Ice traction devices are recommended as a backup if the temps drop tonight, the trails could be icy in the morning.  As of 8:00 this morning Hwy 441, Newfound Gap Road was closed. Call 865-436-1200 x 631 or twitter for updates: https://twitter.com/smokiesroadsnps.  Hopefully it won't be closed for long.

As you can see from the photo below it was a windy day on the mountain. The fire hydrant is used in the event of fire, yes, they have fire hoses on the mountain.

That's CRAZY!!! You all got quite a bit of snow! And it's May, and 441 was closed due to snow?!? I know I've heard that it can be rather cool up on top even in the summer. We'll be in the park week after next. I hope it's a little warmer....but I hope not a heat wave either! Oh well, you can't control the weather, so you just enjoy where you're at! Ya'll have a fun snowy day up top! Heehee!

Tammy, are you and your husband planing any trails? Have a great trip! The snow looks good.

Hope you are enjoying the snow! I had no idea there was a Fire Hydrant on top of mountain. Is the water for it pumped from a nearby stream?

We are hiking up Alum Cave tomorrow, may 7, to spend the night. Has any of snow melted today?

We're hiking up Alum Cave trail tomorrow to the lodge. Let us know if you still expect some icy or snow patches. Thanks!!!

Got my family up LeConte for the first time and they got snow! We had an absolute blast and will definitely be back, but what a shock for May! The staff are wonderful. Great job!
