ACT Closure

5/4/2015

Hello down there!  We are having another beautiful day on Mt. LeConte.  I'm sure by now ya'll have heard about Alum Cave Trail closure.  Don't let the closure stop ya'll from coming up to see us.  We have four other beautiful trails to the top. There is Rainbow Falls Trail (6.5 miles), The Bullhead Trail (7 Miles), The Boulevard Trail (8 miles), and Trillium Gap Trail (6.5 miles).  The weather has been perfect the last couple of days.  Yesterday's high reached 55, and the low was 33 degrees.  It is currently 57 degrees under partly cloudy skies.  Peace

Thanks in advance

With ACT closed Monday through Thursday, the other trails will be more heavily traveled during the restoration project of the most popular trail to Mt. LeConte. I suspect Rainbow Falls will see the largest increase in hikers, so you would probably have that same sense of security trekking to the lodge on that trail during this period.

The Alum Bluff Trail will be open on Friday, Saturday and Sunday's all day and then closed the rest of the week. They hope to have it finished by Winter of 2016, I think. It will also be open all week during the winter when the construction has taken a break. Hope this helps! :)

We have reservations for the fall and will be hiking up on Sunday, will we need to take a different trail down? We love ACT and we are bringing first time hikers with us.

Laurie, it is my understanding the ACT is not going to be open Mon. thru Thur. for hiking up or down. You would need to come down a different trail on Mon. morning.

Laurie, I am doing the same at the end of this month. Hiking up ACT but coming down on Monday and even the parking lot will be closed. Decided to come down Rainbow Falls so we will leave the car there. Hired a shuttle to get us to the ACT on Sunday. Check out A Walk in the Woods for shuttle services. Good luck!

There is also the Brushy Mountain Trail, which connects with the Trillium Gap Trail. If you're looking for a quiet and rarely used, albeit long, hike, it's another option.

I've always preferred Rainbow Falls trail anyway. So gorgeous!

Liz: I know you won't read this until after your trek up to the Lodge, but your account of your dad gives me additional optimism for hiking up there. After a knee replacement last September, I made the hike up April 9th with no difficulty in the new knee. But now I am suspecting that I will need a replacement of the other knee. Great Day in the Morning !!! Our bodies are blessed by Mother Nature and cursed by Father Time ! Good hiking to you today. Would enjoy meeting your dad, too. G'day.

I like Bullhead. Beautiful scenery, quiet. Try going up Rainbow and down Bullhead - they share a parking lot.

My goodness, 88 years old and still hiking up Leconte! I'm impressed! I hope you have many more years of hiking! If I am fortunate to live that long I hope I'm able to still get outdoors and have some hiking adventures!
